- Present brief statement of topic
Asthma Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease
involving episodes or attacks of small airways
narrowing from inflammation and
hyperresponsiveness to asthma triggers. Many
triggers exist, including allergens, infections,
exercise, abrupt changes in the weather, or
exposure to airway irritants, such as tobacco
smoke. Asthma attacks can vary from mild to
life-threatening, and involve shortness of
breath, coughing, wheezing, chest pain or
tightness, or any combination of these symptoms.
13Cross-cutting fact sheets
Key Findings Prevalence In 2001, 20.3 milli

which 6.3 million were children under 18 years of
age. Current asthma prevalence was highest for n
on-Hispanic blacks at 83 per 1,000 population.
Among adults, asthma was higher among women, but

Challenges and Future Opportunities
? Increase the usefulness of provider-based data
to monitor and assess quality of care by
providing national benchmark data for comparison
with state and local performance. Data
collection forms and sampling frames can be
adapted to address quality of care issues and
information can be linked to data on provider
characteristics.
