21Challenges facing persons with disabilities
- New Research in Health Affairs
- At any given time, an estimated 1.3 - 1.5 million
newly eligible Social Security Disability
Insurance (SSDI) recipients are waiting to
qualify for Medicare. - Nearly one-quarter (24) of disabled workers
under age 65 who receive SSDI were uninsured
during the two years they must wait to obtain
Medicare benefits. - About half of those uninsured during the waiting
period were also uninsured prior to the waiting
period. - The Medicare waiting period often results in
people with severe disabilities struggling
without health insurance.

Medicare Before Age 65," Health Affairs, 25 March
