2Purposes of the Ohio Core
- Establish rigorous high school graduation
expectations for all students - Prepare Ohioans to meet demands of the
knowledge-based economy - Prepare high school graduates to be successful
for college or work - Strengthen link between high school graduation
and college entry - Reduce remediation at the college level

- Public Schools
- Chartered Nonpublic Schools
- Community Schools
4Graduation RequirementsEffective with the Class
of 2014
- English (4 units)
- Health (½ unit)
- Mathematics (4 units)
- One unit must be at least Algebra II or the
equivalent of Algebra II
5Graduation RequirementsEffective 2006-07 School
Year
- Physical education (½ unit)
- Credit may be excused
- If local board of education adopts a policy
- Applies to students in interscholastic athletics,
marching band or cheerleading for two full
seasons - Excused students must complete ½ credit (60 hours
of instruction) in another course of study.

- Must be inquiry-based
- students ask valid scientific questions and
gather and analyze information - With laboratory experience

- Physical sciences (1 unit)

- Life science (advanced biology, etc.)
- Earth or space science (astronomy, physical
geology, etc.)

- Fine Arts (2 semesters or equivalent)
- Anytime from grades 7 through 12
- High school credit may be granted if the
coursework is high school level and taught by a
high school licensed teacher - Otherwise, coursework still counts toward
two-semester graduation requirement - Can apply to 5 electives required
- Career-technical students are exempt from the
fine arts requirement
11Opt-Out
- The student must have attended high school for 2
years. - The parent/guardian must file a signed, written
statement consenting to the opt-out. - The student and parent/guardian must agree to
procedural requirements of the school. - The school, student and parent/guardian must
jointly develop an individual career plan. - The school must provide counseling and support.
- The student must successfully complete the
states curriculum requirements in place in 2006. - The student may not directly enter most 4-year
colleges. - Opt Out provision in effect for 3 years unless
extended by legislature.
