Richard Nixon
  • In the late 1960s, many in the nation believed
that the country had lost its sense of right and
    wrong.
  • Conservatives attacked the counterculture and
presented their own ideas on how to return the
country to a just and moral society.
  • They called the hippies spoiled kids that didnt
have the tools for delayed gratification.
  • They attacked the Great Society Programs for
greatly increasing the size and power of the
    federal govt.
  • Nixons promise to restore law and order helped
propel him into the White House despite being
    declared politically dead.

was not very popular in the defeated Confederacy.
  • From the 1860s until the late 1960s white
Southerners voted Democratic, but in the late
1960s the Democratic Party was the party of
Civil Rights which many white Southerners
    opposed.
  • In 1968, many white Southern Democrats left the
Democratic Party and voted for the third party
candidate for President, the former Democratic
    Governor of Alabama George Wallace.
  • Sensing the disillusionment of these Southern
Democrats, Nixon slowed desegregation and opposed
the use of busing to desegregate public schools.

Nixons Downfall
  • Nixon was scared of losing elections, so when
re-election came up, he became paranoid.
  • At 230AM June 17, 1972, five men were caught
breaking into the Watergate Hotel, the campaign
    headquarters of the DNC.
  • The story was only followed by two reporters from
    the Washington Post.
  • By the time that the cover-up had been unveiled,
Nixon had won re-election in a landslide.
  • The Watergate incident eventually led to the
    resignation of Nixon.
