Title: Slow down you are going too fast

1
Slow down you are going too fastA workshop
I couldnt get to
  • Dr Paul Collier
  • School of Pharmacy

2
Slow down you are going too fast
  • The situation
  • Students with differing mathematical abilities
  • All have GCSE Maths
  • Approximately
  • 1/3 have GCSE Additional Maths
  • a further 1/3 have GCE A level Maths
  • GCSE only
  • No knowledge of
  • Logarithms
  • Exponentials
  • Calculus

3
Slow down you are going too fast
  • The Problem
  • Clinical Pharmacokinetics
  • Requires knowledge of
  • Logarithms
  • Exponentials
  • Calculus

4
Single IV Bolus Dose
  • Rearranging gives
  • Integrating between limits of time 0 ? t
  • Which gives
  • Expressed as concentration

5
Single IV Bolus Dose
  • This can also be written in the form of
natural logs (i.e. ln or loge)
  • This is equation of a straight line with slope
    -k

Slope -k

Slow down you are going too fast
  • The Problem
  • Clinical Pharmacokinetics
  • Requires knowledge of
  • Logarithms
  • Exponentials
  • Calculus
  • Traditional Lectures
  • Too fast for GCSE-only students give up
  • Too slow for A level students go to sleep
  • Just right (?) for Additional Maths

7
Slow down you are going too fast
  • The Answer (?)
  • Students learn at their own pace
  • e-learning using Microsoft Producer
  • Mini lectures recorded (video MP3 audio files)
  • Lectures made available on CD (and/or stream from
    server)
  • Hard copy of PowerPoint slides provided
  • Feedback
  • Self-assessment questions at end of each mini
    lecture
  • Workshops

Student Comments 1
  • Having a video that could be stopped/started/repea
ted was helpful especially for more complicated
topics, however, I would not like all lectures to
be replaced by video lectures would be a useful
addition to the rest of the lecture series as
    pharmacokinetics is quite confusing.
  • It was helpful to be able to rewind back and go
over any points that I didnt completely
    understand the first time round.
  • A lot easier to listen to than normal lectures!
I get bored of listening to the monotone, you can
pause it, or rewind it to make sure we get any
extra points!! Much more beneficial than real
    lectures.
  • Can listen to lectures many times, therefore, can
pick up on any points that were missed.

Student Comments 2
  • The video lectures were very useful and compared
to lectures you could stop the video and take
down notes and go over any points you missed.
  • Although I wouldnt want all my lectures like
this it was useful to be able to rewind over
points I didnt understand the first time.
  • I found the CD very helpful because if I didnt
understand anything I could go back over it at my
    own pace.
  • I found the CD really good because it was easy to
rewind any bits I didnt understand to
listen/watch again, which you obviously cant do
    in a normal lecture.

16
Student Comments 3
  • You could do it in your own time at a time that
suited you in the comfort of your own home.
  • Thought that the CD was very useful, as you could
go over the lectures in your own time and were
able to take it in more.
  • It was good to be able to do the lectures in your
    own time.
  • Video lectures are great more!
  • The entire pharmacokinetics lectures should be on
video. It would be better if there is a
frequently asked question section in the CD.
  • Very good, perhaps put all on CD instead of just
    5 lectures.
  • CD is a good idea, but not for pharmacokinetics
    lectures.

17
Student Comments 4
  • Not all the PCs in the Heaney Library could play
    sound
  • Make video files larger/higher quality.
  • Overlay bullet points onto video.
  • Add more dynamism to lecture.
  • Useful for revision purposes.
  • You cant ask a CD Rom for help if you have
    specific difficulties during a lecture.
