For many people, homeless is a dirty word a
word that strips dignity and makes us want to
look away.

Not so for Lena Sweet participating in the DEO
(Discipleship, Encounter, Outreach) program in
Denver.

DEO participants depend on the support of sending
and receiving congregations to make connections
with community organizations like The Gathering
Place.

The Gathering Place is Denver's only day shelter
specifically designed to meet the needs of
homeless women and children.

It's a place of sunshine and laughter, love and
dignity.

Its a place that offers laundry and shower
facilities, meals and free child care.

Its the place Myrtle Thomas finds writing
classes and card making, but more importantly,
she finds the company of other women.

"When you come in and they know you, it makes you
feel like somebody. Like you're very
important,Myrtle said.

And it's a place where Lena and Robin Hagedorn
have formed a special bond.

A year ago, Robins financial situation forced
her to sell the house where she and her father
grew up.

I came here for the moral support, Robin said.
Without The Gathering Place, Robin does not know
where she would be.

Were all the same, said Lena. Were all
looking to be accepted.
