What is this sickness?

• Caused by the parasite Trypanosoma brucei
  rhodesiense
• This parasite is found in different strains
• Eastern African Sleeping Sickness
• Western African Sleeping Sickness (Gambian)
• Spread by tsetse flies

So is this a bacteria?

• NO!
• Protozoan (single celled, eukaryotic, organism)

How is it contracted?

• It is contracted, as previously stated, by the
  tsetse fly
• Fly ingests parasite from another infected
  mammal bites human and parasite multiplies

What are the symptoms?

• Causes swelling of the lymph nodes (in neck and
  other areas)
• Leaves a chancre, distinct rash left by this
  infection
• Occurs in stages
• Last stage would give victim (in Gambian strains)
  about a month to live

How many people die from this?

• The mortality rate, as of now
• African trypanosomiasis caused 55,000 deaths
• No epidemic since 1996
• No death rate, and is curable
• Less than 1500 cases a year in Africa
• Only 50 cases found in the US

Is there a treatment?!

• YES!!!!
• Not one for preventative measures
• There is a vaccine to cure the infection,
  Suramin, pentamidine, and bereni.
• These werent extremely stable, but came cheaper
  and were more bountiful to come by.
