rules of the road, as well as proper helmet
    usage for the public.
  • Bicycle Rodeos are a Free Bicycle Safety
Education service offered to the public. A rodeo

  • Involvement by the participant is required during
    a rodeo.

25
Bicycle Safety Rodeo
  • 4 Key Components
  • Balance
  • Control
  • Turning
  • Stopping

26
Balance
  • Layout 2 parallel lines about 60 foot long and 3
foot apart. Have participants ride between the
lines as slowly as they can without touching
their feet to the ground or crossing the lines.
  • This should take at least 30 seconds to ride the
    60 foot section.

27
Balance
28
Control
  • Place 10 small cones approximately 6 feet
  • apart in a straight line. Have participants
  • ride in and out of the cones, in a serpentine
pattern, without wobbling or touching their feet
    to the ground.

29
Turning
Layout cones as shown in the diagram. Participants
should enter on their bikes, make three right
turns and two left turns to exit.
30
STOP
LEFT TURN
RIGHT TURN
ALSO MEANS RIGHT TURN

31
Stop Box
Place 3 cones at the end of a 100 foot distance.
Have participants ride their bikes at a normal
speed and then come to a complete stop within 2-4
feet of the cones. This should be a controlled
stop. Neither foot can touch the ground until the
bike has stopped completely. No skidding or
wobbling.

Helpful Hints
  • Ride the course to demonstrate the proper way to
complete the course and to show participants the
    correct route to take.
  • Use sidewalk chalk, signs, or assistants to help
direct participants in the right direction.

34
Helpful Hints
  • You may have to modify the course to fit your
location. If you modify the course, make sure to
incorporate all four skills (balance, control,
    turning, and stopping).
  • Remember, this is a slow speed control drill.
Make the participants control their speed
    throughout the course.

35
Evaluations
  • Evaluate each student. Have them repeat the
course as many times as they need to.
  • Let everyone ride at least twice.
