The Japanese have practiced several religions
over the years, but overall Buddhism is the most
recognized by foreign countries.

meaning enlightened one.

Shinto is a Japanese religion from prehistory.
It is the most widely Practiced religion of
Japan. The religion is based primarily on the
way Of the gods or kami. The kami are the spirits
of nature around us, Namely the earth, storms,
air, water, fire, etc. After its establishment,
Buddhism eventually overshadowed Shinto because
of claims that the Kami were just manifestations
of Buddha. Later, however, Kobo Daishi
indoctrinated Buddhism and Shinto together,
calling it Ryobu Shinto or Shinto of two
different kinds. Buddhism dominated Shinto With
some ideas from Confucianism. The original
Shinto priests Became fortune-tellers and
magicians.
