Background
  • Invitation to attend a meeting in the Science
    City of Muñoz on February 2005, where the MDGs
    and their localization were introduced
  • This was followed by a visit by the
    representative of UN Habitat to Butuan City in
    March 2005 where a formal introduction of the
    MDGs and initiatives for their localization were
    made to the Chief Executive and the City
    Officials of Butuan City
  • MDG was then a foreign terminology to us
  • After the briefing, we found out that it was
    nothing new after all

Background
  • That these were areas of concern of the LGUs
    concerns that we have been actually trying to
    address
  • Mayor Democrito Plazas reaction to this was we
    are actually working on addressing the
    goalsknowing that these are the primary concerns
    of our people in Butuan
  • And that these are the mandated tasks of the
    Local Government Units as provided for by the
    Local Government Code
  • The bottomline is that these will all be for the
    benefit of our people, our constituents who we
    have all committed to serve, most especially
    those who are poverty-stricken and in dire need
    of assistance.

What has been done?
The City of Butuan has implemented and is
currently implementing various programs and
projects that would lead to the attainment of the
MDGs These include not just programs and
projects, but also executive and legislative
actions supportive of the MDGs.

Goal 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Self-Employment Assistance (SEA)
  • Development Action of Inter-sectoral Synergy for
    Poverty Reduction
  • Waterworks and spring development
  • Establishment, Rehabilitation and Concreting of
    various farm-to-market roads and bridges
  • Provision of farm equipment and inputs
  • Establishment of Pre- and Post Harvest
    facilities (includes warehouse, rice,
    corn and cassava mills)

Goal 2 Achieve universal primary education
  • Employment of teachers through the Local School
    Board
  • Construction of new classrooms/buildings through
    the Local School Board
  • Continuing acquisition of computers and other
    equipment through the Local School Board
  • Maintenance and operation of Day Care Centers
  • Continued operation of the Tuloy
    Aral Walang Sagabal (TAWAG)
    Center for the
    differently-abled
    children
  • Continued operation of the Mobile
    School for Street Children

Goal 3 Promote gender equality and women
empowerment
  • Self-employment assistance

    Coordinating Council

    with the Forward Filipina)
