7
Words I dont know.( continued)
  • 1. Phosphorescent- Ahead lay some of the most
productive walnut and hickory trees I have ever
looted, a good swimming hole in a creek, and, in
one bit of forest, a real curiosity- a
phosphorescent stump which gleamed at night with
a foxfire as luminescent as all the lightning
bugs in the world ghostly and terrifying to all
the boys who saw it for the first time.
  • I think it means a bright stump. Correct-
    exhibiting
  • 2. Prehensile- without a moment hesitation he
waded in and began felling all the bottom, his
sensitive prehensile fingers telling him all that
he needed to know this minnow pond.
  • I think it means small. Correct- adapted
for seizing or grasping especially by wrapping
    around.
  • 3. Epaulets-And upon a bank overlooking a bend
in the big stream we found wild strawberries
almost as bright as the red epaulets in the wings
    if the blackbirds.
  • I think is means feathers. Correct-
something that ornaments or protects the
    shoulder

8
Words I don't know.
  • Raucous-This raucous old bird who cawed and
cussed in a crow like language, was arching his
wings and strutting like a poolroom bully as
Rascal pushed open the screen and trundled into
the sunlight , his penny shining like newly
    minted gold
  • I think it means ugly. Correct-
    disagreeably harsh or strident.
  • Complacent-We rushed down stairs in out pajamas
to find Theo standing on a chair, treed by a
complacent little raccoon who sat on the floor
below blinking up at this crazy human who was
    screeching like a fire siren.
  • I think it means small. Correct- to please
    greatly.

9
World War 2
  • In 1939 the Germans invaded Poland without any
    warning.
  • Many other countries helped in the war including
    Japan, Australia, Italians and Indians.
  • This was the deadliest battle in history.
  • During the war nearly 50 to 60 million people
    died.
  • During the battle they had many air, land, and
    sea battles.
