Rascal
  • Sterling North

2
Main IdeaThe wonderful summer of Rascal and
Sterling
  • Over the summer Rascal and Pa went on a trip
    where Sterling found Rascal.
  • Sterling built a canoe while Pa was on his
    business trip.
  • Sterling took Rascal to the Irish Picnic.
  • Sterling entered a pie eating contest at the fair
but got disqualified because of Rascal.
  • Rascal got into the neighbors corn and ate most
    of it.
  • Rascal went back to school with Sterling where
Rascal got in a fight with another student in
Miss Whalens class and bit him.

3
Theme
  • Having a pet raccoon can be harder than it looks.

4
Plot
  • Rascal and Sterling went to the Irish Picnic.
  • Sterling built a canoe and painted it green.
  • Sterling entered the pie eating contest at the
fair, but got disqualified because of Rascal
    trying to help out.
  • Rascal made an attempt to eat the neighbors corn.
  • Slammy Stillman and Rascal got in a fight at
school because Slammy flicked a rubber band at
Rascal so rascal bit him back.
  • Poe- the- crow and Rascal got in an argument over
different shiny objects such as coins.

Christmas time setting
  • Its Christmas! Pa, Rascal, Sterling, and Jessica
had a party to celebrate Christmas. Sterling took
on the responsibility of putting up the Christmas
tree. They had to put a netting over the tree so
that Rascal could not bother it. Sterling was so
surprised! For Christmas, Jessica bought him
canvas to put over the canoe so that they could
put it out in the shed for the winter.

6
Characters
  • Rascal is the main character in the story. He is
Sterlings pet raccoon. Rascal is black and has a
white and black ringed tail. Rascal shows
smartness and is very curious. He wears a little
    mask over his face.
  • Slammy is a very greedy, impolite, rude 12 year
old boy. He hates a lot of people, especially
Rascal. He flicked a rubber band at Rascal and
hit his eye. Slammy is in Miss Whalens class.
  • Sterling is another one of the major characters
in the story. He is a tall boy. He is very smart
    and loves his pet raccoon.

7
Unknown words
  • Belfry-
  • After any thievery he would travel by devious
routes before slipping between the wide slats of
the Methodist belfry where he presumably stored
his loot. I think it means the part of a church
where the bell is kept. The definition is a bell
    tower.
  • Raucous-
  • The crows raucous criticism followed me all the
way down the shaft and out into the sunlight. I
think it means ongoing. The definition is
    disagreeably harsh or strident.
  • Ignorance-
  • However, being not quite twelve, I was not in
full despair of my ignorance. I think it means
that you are a know it all. The definition is
    distitute of knowledge or education.
  • Farfetched-
  • Then a farfetched possibility struck me like a
bolt from the blue. I think it means really
important. It means out of the ordinary.
  • Overindulgence-
  • Just now, however, my little raccoon was happily
exhausted, sleeping off his overindulgence in
turtle eggs. I think it means to play. It means
    to eat to much.

8
World War 1
  • World War 1 began in the year of 1914.
  • During this war, 10 million of the soldiers died.
  • About 21 million soldiers were severely wounded.
  • The death toll in the end was nearly 116,516.
  • The war finally ended in the year of 1918.

9
Similes and Metaphors
  • Theo is a neat freak.
  • Rascal is like a mischevious hunter.
  • Sterling is a clever person.
  • Pa is like an ongoing flight. (always on the go)
