1848 Seneca Falls Convention
  • Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott
    organized the Seneca Falls Convention.
  • Over three hundred men and women attended.
  • Here, the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted.
  • The Seneca Falls Convention is considered to be
the beginning of the Suffrage movement.

4
The Declaration of Sentiments
  • The Declaration of Sentiments was a document
drafted and signed by over 300 men and women.
  • It detailed the injustices of women and the
    resolutions for them.
  • Including the right to vote was the most
controversial topic discussed at this convention.

5
Great Women Elizabeth Cady Stanton
  • Elizabeth Cady Stanton started off as an
abolitionist but was appalled when she was forced
to sit in the balcony at an anti-slavery
convention. It is here that she started to
    advocate for womens rights.

6
Great Women Lucy Stone
  • Lucy Stone was the first woman to keep her last
name in when she married. Lucy was an advocate
of womens rights and refused to marry her
husband unless they created their own marriage
agreement. This marriage agreement allowed Lucy
to be an equal partner, and not submissive.

7
Great Women Susan B. Anthony
  • Susan B. Anthony was originally an abolitionist,
but became an advocate of womens rights when she
heard Lucy Stone speak. Although she was an
advocate of all womens rights, she was
especially concerned with the right to vote. She
was so instrumental in obtaining this right that
the 19th amendment is named after her.

How the Suffrage Movement has
affected us today
  • Title 9
  • Title 9 was part of the Civil Rights Act that
declared men and women must have equal
opportunity to compete in sports in federally
funded schools. This has affected many girls and
women around the United States by giving them an
equal opportunity to compete in sports.
  • The glass ceiling
  • The glass ceiling is the idea that there is an
invisible barrier that keeps women from
leadership positions. There is some debate to
whether or not this actually exists. There has
yet to be a woman president, but women do exist
in the senate and the house of representatives.

Thanks for viewing!
  • I think that this would be a really good idea for
a presentation in your classroom. It is
interesting to watch. Instead of writing on the
board or using overheads, it would be more
interesting to use power point presentations. It
would be easy for students to take notes off of,
and hopefully they would be more engaged if you
use graphics, neat fonts, and some color. It
allows me to be more creative in my planning.
Also, it allows me to show them something on the
internet without the pain and hassle of typing in
a URL. It would be right there for me!
  • As far as classroom implications, power point
would be a good idea for students to do as an
assessment. Instead of a test, it would be more
interesting for them to create their own power
point presentations. They could present to the
class, or I could just view them. It allows
students to be more creative and is more engaging
than writing an essay or completing a multiple
choice test. However, the school would have to
have this technology in the school. Also, time
would have to be allotted in class for students
to complete this as an assessment.
