2Gunpowder
During the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu Di wants a
research done on the secrets of eternal life. So
his scientists tried to experiment with sulphur,
charcoal and saltpeter which exploded. This
explosive mixture was then called gunpowder.
Although gunpowder did not encourage eternal
life, it was used to treat skin diseases and to
kill insects.
3Chinese Paper
Paper was invented by Cai Lu in 105 AD. It is one
of the four great inventions of China. He used
materials such as tree bark, hemp and bamboo.
Xuan paper is the best known paper which is
mainly used in Chinese painting and calligraphy.
4Compass
- By the 3rd A.D., Chinese scientists studied
and learned to make magnets by heating pieces
of ore to red hot temperatures and then cooling
the pieces in a North/South position. Then they
are placed on a piece of reed and floated in a
bowl of water marked with directions.
5Umbrella
- Umbrellas were invented by the Chinese. The
umbrellas were made from oiled paper because oil
repels water. The frames were made from mulberry
bark or bamboo. The Chinese use umbrellas to keep
the sun off their skin. Red and yellow umbrellas
were used by royalty and blue umbrellas were used
by the common people..
