  • A temporary Hebrew leader who settled disputes
and led troops into battle in times.
  • At this time, the twelve tribes of Israel were
ruled by tribal councils. Judges would appear
during a time of crisis, like an attack from an
enemy, to unify the tribes for a short time.

  • Day of rest
  • When living in captivity in Babylonia, Judeans
(Jews) could not continue worshipping in their

days to pray and talk about their religion and
    history. (page 113)

8
Where did the Hebrews trade?
  • The Hebrews traded along the Tigris and Euphrates
Rivers and sometimes south along the
Mediterranean coast to trade with Egyptian,
    Phoenician, and Cretan merchants.

9
What goods did Hebrews trade?
  • Goods made from gold, copper, and ivory. They
    were traded for silver.

10
What new ideas did the Hebrews develop and
contribute to later civilizations?
  • Belief in one God.
  • Belief in a just (right or fair) God
  • Belief that individuals and society should also
    be just.
  • Laws (the Ten Commandments) designed to teach
people to treat each other fairly

11
How was the Hebrew belief in one God important to
civilization?
  • The Hebrews were the first culture to limit
themselves to the worship of one God. Their
religion, Judaism, is still being practiced
today. Two other major world religions,
Christianity and Islam, have their roots in
Judaism and practice a belief in only one God who
    is righteous and just.
