Fall of Nixon

• Despite the Nixons landslide re-election in
  1972, the Watergate scandal led to his
  resignation.
• President Ford decided to pardon Nixon and focus
  on the worsening economy.
• Ford tried to stop inflation by encouraging a
  tight money policy where the Federal Reserve Bank
  increased interest rates.
• These action triggered the worst recession in 40
  years.
• With the Republican President, and a Democratic
  Congress, very little legislation was passed.
• With only 2 years in the White House, Ford vetoed
  more than 50 pieces of legislation.

Jimmy Carter

• Despite national outcry at Fords pardon of Nixon
  and the worsening American economy, Democrat
  Jimmy Carter from Georgia won the Presidency by a
  narrow margin.
• Carter failed to reach out to Congress and
  although both the President and Congress were
  controlled by Democrats, they didnt work
  together.
• During the Carter years, the energy crisis got
  worse, so did the economy.
• In the summer of 1979, a second major fuel
  shortage hit the United States because of
  revolution in Iran.
• This caused inflation to soar again.

The Changing Economy in the 1970s

• Manufacturing jobs in the United States began to
  decline in the 1950s.
• Most manufacturing jobs required little skill and
  were high pay.
• The new jobs were in the service sector were
  split. The high pay jobs required high skill
  (college) and the low skill service jobs were
  also low pay.
• Growing overseas competition from West Germany
  and Japan cut into key U.S. industries like
  steel, clothing, and cars.

Carters Foreign Policy

• President Carters commitment to human rights
  caused renewed tensions between the U.S. and the
  Soviet Union China which had been easing during
  the Nixon and Ford Administrations.
• President Carter met with Soviet Premier Brezhnev
  in June 1979 and signed the SALT II agreement.
• The agreement lacked support in Congress and when
  the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in December 1979,
  Carter did not fight for the passage of SALT II.

Camp David Accords

• In 1977 President Carter helped forge a peace
  between Egypt and Israel.
• When the talks between Begin and Sadat stalled,
  Carter invited the two of them to Camp David.
• After 12 days of talks, a treaty was signed
  between the two nations.

Iran Hostage Crisis

• By 1979, the Shah of Iran, a U.S. ally, was in
  severe trouble.
• His regime was corrupt and cruel.
• In January 1979, revolution broke out led by
  Ayatollah Khomeini.
• They revolutionaries overthrew the Shah and
  established a Islamic state.
• The Shah, who had fled Iran in January 1979 was
  allowed to enter the U.S. for cancer treatment in
  October 1979.
• This act angered the revolutionaries who in
  November over ran the U.S. embassy in Tehran and
  took 52 Americans hostage.
• The crisis ended 444 days later with the release
  of the hostages.

Three Mile Island

• The accident at the Three Mile Island Middletown,
  PA 3/28/79, was the most serious in U.S.
  commercial nuclear power plant operating history.
• It did not led to deaths or injuries to plant
  workers or members of the nearby community.
• It brought about sweeping changes involving
  emergency response planning, reactor operator
  training, human factors engineering, radiation
  protection, and many other areas of nuclear power
  plant operations.
• It also caused the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
  Commission to tighten and heighten its regulatory
  oversight. Resultant changes in the nuclear power
  industry and at the NRC had the effect of
  enhancing safety.
