  • From Adam Jones, University of Leipzig
  • through the British Library's Endangered Archives
programme (and following on from that after the
project ended) we've digitised 25,000 pages of
pre-1930 records of the Leipzig Mission, of which
the originals are in the archive of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania's archive
in Moshi, Tanzania. Copies have been / are being
    deposited (on DVDs) in
  • Tanzanian National Archives, Dar es Salaam
    (master copy)
  • British Library, London
  • University of Leipzig, Institut fuer Afrikanistik
  • the Moshi archive itself.
  • I hope to publish a list of these records soon in
my series "Mission Archives" (sub-series of
University of Leipzig Papers on Africa).

    Stavanger 1842.
  • We also have a number of collections from
    individuals, particularly missionaries.
  • In additions comes material from other
    organizations and institutions.
  • Our aim is to offer professional assistance on a
high academic level to all visitors and users.

Availability of material
  • Some handwritten manuscripts have been
    transcribed, partly with word processors.
  • Some documents have been translated into English,
    French and Malagasy.
  • We are in the process of digitizing material,
such as documents, photos and 16 mm films.

Some examples (I)
  • The Petersen memoirs from Madagascar
  • A 140 page manuscript in Norwegian has been
transcribed and published on our website.
  • Originally written in Flaxton, North Dakota, in
1904, when Peterson was serving as a Lutheran
pastor there, reflecting on missionary work in
    western Madagascar 1893-1900.
  • Perhaps an English translation would be
    appreciated?
