Fossil Fuel based power generation constitutes
the largest mode of power generation in the world
and will remain so in the coming decades
6
Power Generation Mix of India
Coal is expected to remain the preferred fuel
for coming decades. 64 of the 11th plan targets
consists of coal based generation. Recent
developments are encouraging for the nuclear fuel
based generation.

National Power Objectives
Ambitious Capacity Addition Plans
  • Power for all by 2012
  • Per capita consumption of power to be increased
    to 1000 Units by 2012.
  • Min. lifeline consumption of 1 unit/ household/
    day by 2012.
  • Accessibility of electricity by all households by
    2012.

Issue How to develop strategies for rapid
capacity addition without detrimental effects on
the environment.

NTPC AMONGST THE CLEANEST FOSSIL FUEL POWER
GENERATORS
SOURCE CARMA.ORG NTPC ANALYSIS
  • Assumptions
  • The largest generating companies with Annual
    generation above 150 BU
  • The companies having minimum fossil fuel mix of
    50

11
NTPCs vision on climate change
  • Going Higher on Generation, lowering GHG
    intensity

12
NTPCs approach to climate change
13
NTPC Approach
  • As a responsible Corporate Citizen, NTPC accords
high priority to its responsibility towards
    Climate and Sustainability.
  • Investment in development of new technology
through RD and Energy Technology center.
  • NTPC sets aside up to 1 of its distributable
profit for RD including 0.5 for technology
    initiatives for sustainable energy development.
  • Generation Capacity Expansion is complemented by
    Emission Mitigation Endeavours
  • Sustained effort to enhance plant efficiency
  • Suitably realign the fuel mix
  • Adoption of greener and eco-friendly technologies

14
NETRA Focus on Research and new Technologies
  • RD DEPARTMENT FOR APPLIED RESEARCH
  • ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES WORKING ON 14 PROJECTS
    THROUGH IDENTIFIED INSTITUTIONS IN AREAS
    PERTAINING TO
  • POWER PLANT EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT
  • CARBON SEQUESTRATION
  • WASTE HEAT UTILISATION, ETC
  • ET AND RD CENTRE BEING MERGED TO FORM NETRA
    (NTPC ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES RESEARCH ALLIANCE)TO
ENABLE MORE FOCUS AND SYNERGISTIC RESEARCH
  • INTEGRATED GASIFICATION COMBINED CYCLE (IGCC)
  • NTPC IN COLLABORATION WITH BHEL IS IN PROCESS OF
INSTALLING AN IGCC PROJECT IN AURAIYA.
  • NTPC, IN ASSOCIATION WITH NEXANT, HAS DONE STUDY
ON GASIFIER SUITABLE FOR INDIAN COAL.

Efficiency Improvement through Renovation
Modernization
After 100,000 operating hours machine become due
for RM RM offers a quick and low cost capacity
addition and efficiency enhancement option. RM
objectives are
  • Restoration, Sustenance Enhancement of
    Efficiency
  • Capacity enhancement
  • Life extension of old units
  • Mitigate obsolescence
  • Compliance to applicable pollution norms
  • Equipment safety
  • Improvement in equipment / system reliability

19
NTPC Fuel Mix by 2017
Capacity mix - 2012 (50,000 MW)
Capacity mix - 2017 (75,000 MW)
Capacity mix - TODAY (29,894 MW)
20
Renewable
  • NTPC plans to add 1000 MW from renewable sources
    by 2017.
  • Recently signed MoU for 500 MW of wind power in
    Karnataka.
  • MoU with ADB for development of 500 MW from
    renewable sources.
  • NTPC has taken major initiatives for fast
tracking its solar power development programme.
  • We hope to set up 15MW solar capacity by 2012 and
    50 MW capacity by 2014.

21
Distributed Generation
  • NTPC has commissioned 10 projects in off-grid
distributed power generation mode based on
bi-mass, solar PV, micro hydel etc in villages
    around projects.
  • Several others are planned as part of CSR
    activities.
  • There is also proposal for setting up mini hydel
projects at several places in Punjab and
    North-eastern states.

22
Green Measures
  • NTPC has created green wealth and carbon sink in
the form of more than 18 millions trees planted
    in and around plant areas.
  • NTPC has started implementing modern water
harvesting systems in all upcoming townships in
the projects for better management of water.
  • NTPC is committed for development of 1 million Sq
feet of green building space within NTPC
    premises.
  • Energy Conservation can also play a major role
NTPC has adopted practices like Online Energy
    Management Systems, Energy Audit, Water-balance
Audit for main plant and BOP equipments.

As per study conducted by National Remote Sensing
Agency, Hyderabad, the summer peak temperatures
in areas surrounding Ramagundam Thermal Power
Station of NTPC where about 1.2 million trees
have been planted, has reduced to the extent of
30 C.
23
Conclusion
  • NTPC stands committed for sustainable power
    development
