Economic Status of India
  • India has increasingly integrated into the global
    economy. Indian Economy has witnessed dynamic
    growth in recent years and overall economic
    upsurge.
  • From a growth rate of 5.5 in 1997-98 to 2001-02
    it has accelerated to likely 7 in 10th plan
    period (2002-03 to 2006-07).
  • Increased inflow of FDI, from 3.7 billion in
    1997-2002 to 5.4 billion in 10th plan up to Dec,
    2005.

  • The services sector accounts for 54 of GDP.
  • Currently the fastest-growing sector of the
    economy, growing at 9 per annum since mid 90s.

  • India developed a strong science technology
    base which provides technical and technological
    inputs for overall economic development.
  • Has 273 Universities, 12300 colleges, IITs, IIMs
    and National Institute of Technologies to
    develop trained technical and management
    manpower.
  • India has 200 major research development
    institutions under government (CSIR, DRDO, ICAR
    ICMR) other private sector institutions.
  • DSIR, Min of ST, Govt. of India has the task of
    Technology Promotion, Development and its
    utilization.

    globally recognized as far-reaching and powerful
    enabling technology.

Growth in IT IT Enables Services
  • Phenomenal growth in this sector
  • Exports of Indian software services sector was
    US 17.2 billion in 2004-05, up 34 from US 12.8
    billion in 2003-04.
  • India has attained a large share of offshore
    market in this area -
  • 65 share of global offshore IT services
    (software)
  • 46 of global off shoring (BPO) industry
  • Output of Indian electronics and IT industry was
    US 32.25 billion during 2004-05, up 25.4 from
    US 25.71 billion in 2003-2004.
  • Export revenues from ITES-BPO sector increased
    rapidly from US2.5 billion in 2002-03 to US 3.6
    billion in 2003-04, and US 5.1 billion in
    2004-05
  • Major impact has been on employment generation,
    which has almost doubled each year.

Growth in Road Sector
  • India has one of the largest road networks in the
    world aggregating to 3.34 million kilometers at
    present.
  • Road network consists of National highways, state
    highways, major district roads other district
    roads and village roads.
  • Largest highway project undertaken in country
    being implemented by NHAI, Phase-I Phase-II of
    NHDP envisaged 4/6 laning of about 14279
    kilometers of national highways at a total
    estimated cost of Rs. 65,000.
  • The increasing resource requirements, concern for
    managerial efficiency and consumer responsiveness
    led to an active involvement of private sector.
  • Govt has laid down comprehensive policy
    guidelines for private sector participation in
    highway sector.

  • Indias Telecommunication network 3rd largest in
    the world and second largest among the emerging
    economies of Asia with more than 270 million
    connections.
  • Continuous significant growth during the year and
    has emerged as one of the key sectors responsible
    for Indias resurgent economic growth.
  • Targeted growth of 250 million by end of 2007
    achieved in month of Oct, 2007
  • Total no of telephones increased from 76.53
    million on March, 2004 to 272.88 million on
    Dec,2007.

Global Trends in RD Services
  • Global RD investments have increased from 438
    to 576 billion at an average annual growth of
    4.4 between 1991-96 and increased to 677
    billion at an average annual growth rate of 2.8
    from 1996-2002.
  • India ranked 6th among developing economies in
    terms of total RD between 1996 and 2002 without
    a comparable ranking for business RD sector.
  • India is considered as a preferred destination
    for multinational RD institutions, as is evident
    by the presence of about 150 foreign RD centers
    in India.
  • Indian RD institutions already stepped out for
    marketing efforts abroad, and also strengthened
    their RD services capabilities in commercial
    terms on global basis.

Conclusion
  • With the globalization and liberalization of
    various economies, and importance of foreign
    direct investments in RD, India has positioned
    itself as a major source of RD and related
    services to other countries.
  • The RD institutions and RD lead enterprises are
    forging partnerships and collaborative
    arrangements in select areas with foreign
    organizations.
  • Export of RD and related services is having
    multiplying effect directly or indirectly in
    enhancing national competitiveness and
    international trade.
  • The RD and associated service segment thus
    provides a unique opportunity to India, not only
    as it has scope for learning from the best in the
    world but as it gives opportunity to develop the
    best and integrate it with the best in the world.
  • Obviously, the effort in totality has to be based
    on innovation and its development focused at
    deriving benefits for the masses.
