List of the recommended materials needed to build
the trap
  • One cattle Panel
  • Frame 2X14g square tubing 24.
  • Door Frame 1 1/2X14g square tubing 12.
  • Door Slides 2X2X1/8 Channel 24.
  • 2X1/4 Flat stock. Random lengths.
  • 3/8 Round Rod. Random Lengths.
  • Other Random Steel
  • Note, welder assumed to be used is a wire feed.
Stick welders should consider purchasing thicker
    tubing than mentioned above

NEXT
5
The first step is to take a cattle panel and cut
it in half. The easiest way to do this is with
bolt cutters.
NEXT
6
The first step is to take a cattle panel and cut
it in half. The easiest way to do this is with
bolt cutters.
NEXT
7
Take one half of the panel just split.
NEXT
8
Cut away the Door section. This section will be
4 feet wide and 3 feet high from the bottom
center of the panel.
NEXT
9
Cut away the Door section. This section will be
4 feet wide and 3 feet high from the bottom
center of the panel.
NEXT
10
Next the 2x2 square tubing is cut and a frame
is welded together to fit the larger panel
NEXT
11
To make the slides or channel for the guillotine
door take two 6 pieces of 2X2X1/8 angle iron
and weld them together.
WELD THE TWO 6 PIECES TOGETHER TO FORM ONE PIECE
OF CHANNEL
NEXT
12
Now the Door Slides will can be welded in place.
A Door Catch must be placed on one or both of
the slides in the position indicated
These catches will hold the door closed when a
hog is trapped.
NEXT
13
The Catches are simply gravity operated.
At the indicated spot from the previous page a
1/2 hole should be drilled into the Slide as
shown
This hole will be for a 3/8 Round Rod from the
Catch to enter and prevent a hog from raising the
door and escaping.
BUILDING A CATCH IS NEXT. A VERY IMPORTANT PART
OF THE TRAP DOOR
DRILL HERE
NEXT
14
Drill a 7/16 hole in the center
The first step of making the Latch is
preparing the Hinge Mechanism with 2x1/4 flat
steel as shown. They are cut 2 long. This makes
a 2x2.
Then make another one identical to the first one.
We will now move on to making the Catch
Mechanism that goes into the hinges.
NEXT
15
Both side and front view will be shown on this
page.
The Catch hinges on a piece of 3/8 rod 3 inches
long.
The Catch itself is a piece of 3/8 rod around 10
inches long welded onto the hinge and then bent
to the form as shown
Gravity pulls on the top heavy rod and forces the
bottom part through the hole in the Slide. As
shown next.
NEXT
16
The first part of the Hinge Mechanism made
earlier is placed on the Catch.
The Latch Mechanism is now ready to be welded
onto the Slide so the lower 3/8 rod will go
through the hole in the Slide. Shown next
NEXT
17
Place the Latch on the Slide so that the rod will
penetrate the hole in the Slide when the Door
slides past it.
Weld only the part of the Hinge Catch that is on
the slide. Keep the Catch Hinge in line so that
the Catch Mechanism moves freely.
NEXT
18
When the TRAP DOOR falls the CATCH extends over
the top of the TRAP DOOR. The trap door can not
be lifted by a trapped hog at this point.
NEXT
19
Now that the Catches are in place we will move on
to the Latch Mechanism. The latch Mechanism is
much the same as the Catch. It is hinged and made
the same way. Only it will be welded to the Trap
Frame as shown below.
NEXT
20
Now the Trap Door Latch will be put together.
Drill a 7/16 hole in the center
The first step of making the Latch is preparing
the Hinge Mechanism that will be welded to the
Trap Frame and hold the Latch. Use 2x1/4 flat
steel as shown.
Then make another one identical to the first one.
We will now move on to making the rest of the
Latch Mechanism.
NEXT
21
The second step of making the Latch is preparing
another Hinge Mechanism that is placed into the
first one. Use 1x1/4 flat steel for this one 2
1/2 long.
Drill two 7/16 holes in this piece as shown
Then make another one identical to the first one.
Now comes the next piece.
NEXT
22
The third step of making the Latch is making the
final pieces of this unbeatable latch. Use 2x1/4
flat steel for this one 5 long.
The next piece is made of 1x1/4 flat. It should
be 4 long.
At one end weld a 3/8 rod 3 long to this piece.
Drill a small hole in this piece as shown. This
is where the trip wire is tied.
NEXT
23
Now the LATCH is ready to assemble
Gather these FOUR pieces and ready them for
assembly.
NEXT
24
Place these pieces together as shown DO NOT WELD.
Slide these pieces onto the 3/8 rod using these
7/16 off center holes.
NEXT
25
Place these pieces together as shown DO NOT WELD.
T
NEXT
26
Get the Fourth piece and place it as shown.
Next weld as indicated
NEXT
27
This is what the first part of the LATCH should
look like
Next get these two pieces , made earlier.
These two pieces will be placed here--
Also place a 3/8 bolt 5 long in this hole. This
is a hinge point so do not tighten the bolt. The
Hinge is about to be welded to the trap
NEXT
28
The LATCH is ready to be welded to the TRAP FRAME
in the indicated location
NEXT
29
The LATCH is now ready to weld to the frame
NEXT
30
Make sure the latch has plenty of room and moves
freely .
Weld to TRAP FRAME here
Weld to TRAP FRAME here. Be sure not to weld the
3/8 bolt which is a hinge point.
LATCH
Trap Frame
NEXT
31
The TRIP Wire is tied here. Remember a hole was
drilled for easy tying.
A spacer may need to be welded to the Trap Frame
to fill in excess space at the point indicated.
Do not weld it to the latch.
NEXT
32
The DOOR will rest on the LATCH as shown.
When the Trip Wire is hit the Latch will come out
from under the DOOR and allow it to fall.
TRAP DOOR
TIP Place BBs in these areas. They will work as
ball bearings allowing the latch to move more
freely

33
When the Trip Wire is hit the LATCH will be
pulled backward and out from under the door.

Get the piece of panel cut out for the TRAP DOOR.
Cut and weld the 1 1/2 square tubing so THAT IT
WILL FIT CORRECTLY IN THE SLIDES. Usually a 1/2
inch smaller than the width of the slides

BUILDING A TRAP
This presentation is on how to construct and set
a Wild Hog Trap From WWW.TEXASBOARS.COM

39
Materials used are 5 cattle panels. (OR
UTILITY PANELS can be used for the sides and no
top is needed) This is preferred if deer are in
the area!!! 11 - 66 - T Post / T Post
Driver A Pair of BOLT CUTTERS / To Cut Cattle
Panels Tie Wire (heavy electric fence wire) and
Pliers Set wire (10 lb picture frame wire) and a
bag of corn A Trap Front From TEXASBOARS.COM
40
I would like to point out at this time That 5
foot utility panels are what I now recommend. I
would strongly encourage any trapper with deer in
the area to leave the top OFF!! Use 2 or 3 of the
5 foot panels 20 foot long to build a circular
trap and overlap the ends of the panels by at
least one foot! REMEMBER to substitute a UTILITY
PANEL in the place of a cattle panel for making
the TRAP FRONT! Hogs can (CAN) and do jump over 4
foot panels. Generally speaking hogs will not
jump over 5 foot panels and DEER CAN if the trap
is at least 15 - 20 feet wide. Most deer CAN NOT
leap over 5 feet from a standing still position.
They need some running room to get over the 5
panels. Trapping deer,, even by accident is
illegal, in my opinion its not worth risking. Go
with a large trap, 5 foot sides and no top if you
have deer in your trapping area!!!!
41
Take the Trap Door Front and prop it up (stand
it up) in the location you want your trap to be
in.
Left Click To Proceed
42
Get two T Post and drive them in the ground IN
FRONT of the Trap Front as shown
Take the tie wire and tie the Trap front to the
Post SECURELY
Left Click To Proceed
43
Take a cattle panel and stand it up next to the
trap front at a 90 degree angle.
With the tie wire lace the corners together
securely as shown in the next frame.
Left Click To Proceed
44
Tie or lace the corners with the tie wire securely
Wild Hogs will beat these corners severely . It
is important the corners and tops be laced
together extremely well
Left Click To Proceed
45
Place the rest of panels in their places and
securely wire them together as shown earlier.
Place a T Post in the center of the trap to
support the top from sagging It will also serve
as a place to tie the trip wire later.
Left Click To Proceed
46
All T Post holding Cattle Panels should be
placed on the OUTSIDE of the Trap and tied
securely with the tie wire
At this point you are ready to place the trap
door in the slides.

48
Once the trap is in place and secure,- the trip
wire is ready to be attached.
To make things easy to see only the Trap Front
and the T Post that was placed in the center
of the trap will be shown.
Left Click To Proceed
49
Attach the trip wire from the latch to the T
Post
The wire is usually attached around one foot from
the ground. It should be high enough that coons
or small hogs wont hit the wire.
Left Click To Proceed
50
The last thing to do is simply bait the trap by
placing whole corn under the trip wire and in
front of the trap.
