When, Where, and What Happened to Pompeii?
  • Pompeii was buried under yards of volcanic ash,
    rock, and lapilli and Almost everyone died. It
    was forgotten until the eighteenth century.
  • Herculeaum and Pompeii were covered in ashes,
    pumice, and hot lava. Mt.Vesuvius is the only
    active volcano in Europe and it has vineyards all
    over its base.
  • The sea boiled and the sky was dark. Small
    tremors had shaken Pompeii for several weeks
    before it erupted.

What Was Pompeii Like BeforeThe Eruption?
  • Narrow and high streets were often filled with
    water. There were very bad sewers back then and
    there was always garbage in the streets.
  • Children played with nuts and stones like
    marbles. They also played with costumes like
    knights and gladiators. Some even had carts to
    play in.
  • Slaves were very important back then.
  • There were walls all around Pompeii

How Did We Learn About Pompeii and the Eruption?
  • The only mention of the eruption was in old books
    like the ones by Pliny the Younger
  • In 1594 traces of old buildings were found. In
    1694, a farmer digging the wells uncovered more.
    In 1710, pieces of marble were found on the site
    of Herculeaum.
  • Pliny the Elder, Pliny the youngers uncle, died
    in the eruption.
