History of Boxing
  • The ancient greeks believed fist fighting was one
    of the games played by the god on Olympus thus
    it became part of the Olympic Games in about 688
    B.C.
  • Boxers fought with leather bands around their
    fist for protection and sometimes wore metal
    filled, leather hand coverings called cesti
  • Resluting in bloody, often duel-to-death, battles
  • Boxing diminished after the fall of Rome
  • It was revived in the 18th century in England
  • Boxing became a workingmans sport during the
    Industrial Revolution
  • Organization was minimal at first, and bouts of
    those eras resembled street fights more than
    modern boxing

Origin Date of Olympic Boxing
  • Boxings origins can be traced all the way back
    to 688 B.C. in Greece, where it was an event in
    the Ancient Olympic Games.
  • The Sport didnt catch on in the United States
    until the late 1800s.
  • Since that time, Americans have dominated the
    sport, capturing 47 of the 191 gold medals
    available

  • How it works
  • Boxing, which is one of the oldest Olympic
    sports, makes its 25th appearance at this years
    games
  • The competition is divided into 12 weight classes
    that range from light flyweight (48 kg or 106
    pounds) to super heavyweight (over 91kg or 200 ½
    pounds).

Problems of Sport
  • In 1866 the Marquess of Queensberry gave his
    support to a new set of rules, which were named
    in his honor
  • They limited the number of 3-minute rounds
  • Eliminating gouging and wrestling, and made the
    use of gloves manditory
  • Bareknuckle bouts did not cease immediately but
    began to decline
