17How to Qualify
- Currently in 4th or 5th grade
- Scored at 90th percentile or above on a
grade-level standardized achievement, aptitude,
mental ability test, or approved state
criterion-referenced test
18Financial Aid
- Duke TIP awarded over 1.5 million of financial
aid in 2005 - Talent Search Fee Waivers
- TIP waives the 25 fee for students who qualify
for free or reduced lunch programs

- January Schools receive initial 4th/5th
Grade Talent Search materials.
Applications are distributed to qualified 4th/5th
graders. TIP Web registration
opens. - March 1 FINAL postmark deadline for
submitting applications by mail. - March 17 Final deadline for applying online.
- May Merit packet mailed to students --
includes Certificate of Achievement,
Navigator newsletter, and Staying on Course. - July Academic 411 is mailed.
- September Navigator newsletter fall issue is
mailed to students. - October EXPLORE registration materials are
mailed from ACT to all current
5th and 6th grade participants enrolled in the
4th/5th Grade Talent Search. - December Writing Contest information mailed to
Talent Search participants. - January EXPLORE testing (dates and sites
are set by ACT). - February EXPLORE testing (dates and sites
are set by ACT). - March Writing Contest winners announced.
- April Navigator newsletter spring
issue is mailed to students. - May-June Highest scorers on EXPLORE test
invited to State Recognition Ceremonies.

21Important Information
- Register only once in 4th or 5th grade.
- 4th/5th Grade Talent Search benefits continue
through the 6th grade year. - Duke TIP offers the 7th Grade Talent Search to
qualifying 7th graders.
Enrollment in the 4th/5th Grade Talent Search
does not automatically qualify students for the
Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search.
