The daughter I respect my mom. Ive never hit my
mom, and I think my mom would kill me if I hit
her. But I mean, I have to learn a certain level
of respect for my mom. My mom is my friend but I
do know when not to push it. When my mom does ask
me for advice, but she doesnt listen when I give
it to her, so I dont know why she asks. Mom I
see myself making mistakes, but Im a very
lenient person. I like to give people another
chance. But you know in German culture, also, you
would not lift your hand against your mother or
any other adult, because my mother today would
knock me out, if I would ever lift my little
finger against her. And my daughter has respect,
but I have no one else. I have no family over
here. She is all I have.

One example of cultural shock Not long after I
stepped on the land of Brazil, I went to a
meeting and there are seven or eight people in
there. I just said Hello to everybody and sat
down. Apparently, what I should have done is to
go round the room shaking hands with everyone
individually. Well, it is silly of me because I
found out later it (not shaking hands) upset
everyone. I mean I think they felt I was taking
them for granted.

A Cultural Quiz
Read the following case of living in Britain and
choose an answer. Then check your answer with
what is mentioned in the comment.
You have been working in the London office of
your company for some time now. It is Friday
evening and your colleagues are about to hit the
pubs before heading home, as they have been doing
all the time youve been here. Now that youve
become one of the pals, they invite you to join
them. You generally dont drink and have a long
way to go home. What should be the appropriate
respond?
Book 4 Unit 10
30
Fun Time
Now look at the following four choices and make a
decision which youll follow. Have a discussion
with your partner
  • Decline politely, saying that you dont drink and
want to get home as soon as possible.
  • React with annoyance when they persist and reject
clearly, even lecturing them for drinking too
    much.
  • Argue with them that even after an hour in the
pub you will still see rush-hour traffic, so
    whats the point?
  • Show enthusiasm, saying that you will go along
but will only have a small drink and ask if its
    all right with them.

Answer D Comments This
Friday-evening visit to pubs is fairly common in
Britain, especially among unmarried people who
see no reason to rush home from work. It is as
much a social thing as a practical action to
avoid rush-hour traffic and the friendly feeling
over a few drinks is important among most British
workers.
Book 4 Unit 10
32
Fun Time
Cont. It is an opportunity to relax, even
to get a little drunk as a reward for a weeks
hard work. They will not think little of you for
not drinking, though a few will show surprise
that you dont even drink beer, which is a
national brew practically. Option D will not only
give you an opportunity to get to know them but
also give an insight into a typical slice of
British lifethe pub scene.
