What the Bible Says about Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • The Apostle Paul - Now about spiritual gifts,
I do not want you to be ignorant. 1 Cor. 12 1

43
Spiritual Gift A Definition
Spiritual Gifts
  • A SPIRITUAL GIFT is an endowment of motivation
and ability, given by the Holy Spirit to every
believer, to be used to minister to others and
therefore build up the church (Body of Christ).

44
An Endowment
Spiritual Gifts
  • It is really a supernatural endowment. A gift
that cannot be used up - and it is beyond my
ability to understand or to explain - it is
    driven by the Holy Spirit

45
Gifts Motivation
Spiritual Gifts
  • An inner desire to serve God in a certain way.
  • I must...replaces I shouldor I ought to

46
Gifts Ability
Spiritual Gifts
  • A special capacity to serve which originates
    with the Holy Spirit
  • I get the gift, the motivation and the ability
    all in the same package.

47
The Difference between The Fruit of the Spirit
from Spiritual Gifts is
  • The fruit of the Spirit reveal Christs
contribution to our character, while our
spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make
    to Gods kingdom.

48

54
The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • A. GIFTS ARE NOT FOR MY BENEFIT, BUT FOR THE
    BENEFIT OF OTHERS.
  • B. GIFTS ARE TO PRODUCE MATURITY AND HARMONY IN
    OUR CHURCH FAMILY.

55
The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • C. RECOGNIZE THAT YOU YOUR TEAM HAVE BOTH A
PRIMARY AND A SECONDARY MINISTRY THROUGH YOUR
    CHURCH

56
The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • Your Your Teams PRIMARY MINISTRY commitment
should be in the area where you are GIFTED.
  • Your Your Teams SECONDARY MINISTRY includes
serving in any other area of the Body when you
    are NEEDED.

57
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • 1. Dont confuse gifts with natural talents
  • Example
  • Public speaking is a natural talent or ability,
but when another is encouraged through your
spoken word, that is a spiritual gift (i.e.
    exhortation)

58
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • 2. Dont confuse gifts with the Fruit of the
    Spirit. Gal.522-23

The Fruit of the Spirit reveal Christs
contribution to our character, while our
spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make
to Gods kingdom.
59
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • 3. Dont confuse gifts with Christian Roles.
  • Examples Evangelist, Pastor etc. In other
    words, gifts functions not office
  • 4. Be aware of the gift projection tendency.
  • (Expecting others to serve the way you do and
    have similar results.)

60
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • 5. Dont feel your gift makes you in any way
    superior to others. 1 Cor. 12 21
  • 6. Realize that using your gifts without love is
    worthless! 1 Cor. 13 1-3

61
7 Cautions About Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual Gifts
  • 7. Yours or anyones Spiritual Gifts are not
    confirmed in isolation.
  • Personal inventory tests alone cannot determine
your gifts. Your gifts are confirmed within
community. Others within the church must see and
    recognize your gifts.

Monitoring My Heartbeat
Heart
  • My heart determines....
  • Why I SAY the things I do
  • Why I FEEL the way I do
  • Why I ACT the way I do
  • My heart is the REAL me!

67
Monitoring My Heartbeat
Heart
  • Why has God given each person a UNIQUE heartbeat
    ?
  • Because you can do Gods will and serve Gods
purpose by letting your heartbeat MOTIVATE you
    for ministry!

68

  • What is your heart telling you about Disaster
    Relief Ministry?
  • When do you find yourself saying, I must do

5 Misconceptions About Abilities
Abilities
  • 1. MYTH People arent born with skills. All
skills must be learned by experience.
  • This simply is not true. There are a number of
talents which seem to be inborn, or are developed
very early in infancy. When people say He just
seems to have a natural talent for it its
    probably true!

73
5 Misconceptions About Abilities
Abilities
  • 2. MYTH Those skills which must be learned,
are learned primarily in the classroom.
  • Actually, some of your most basic skills were
learned at home, in the street, or somewhere
    else outside the classroom.

74
5 Misconceptions About Abilities
Abilities
  • 3. MYTH If you have certain abilities, you
will be very aware that you have them.
  • Again, this is not true. You are probably using
a number of talents or skills that you are not
even aware of! You need some process of skill
    identification.

75
5 Misconceptions About Abilities
Abilities
  • 4. MYTH Skills that I use at work are only
usable in that environment. I couldnt use them
    in D.R. ministry.
  • Hopefully, by the end of this class, youll see
the fallacy of this idea. Be creative!

76
5 Misconceptions About Abilities
Abilities
  • 5. MYTH Most people only have a very few
    abilities.
  • Does anyone really know all of John Scoggins
abilities? The truth is that many national
studies have proven that the average person
possesses from five hundred to seven hundred
    skills!

77
Ability
Abilities
  • What unique abilities do you have which many
    others do not ?
  • What do you find relatively easy while others
    say, Not me!
  • Have you ever surprised yourself by finding out
that you could do something which you thought you
    could not ?

A Rabbit On The Swim Team
Personality
  • Once upon a time, the animals decided to do
something meaningful to meet the problems of the
new world. So they organized a school. The
adopted an activity curriculum of running,
climbing, swimming, and flying. To make it easier
to administer the curriculum, all the animals
    took all the subjects.
  • The duck was excellent in swimming in fact,
better than his instructor. But he made only
passing grades in flying, and he was very poor in
running. Since he was slow in running, he had
to drop swimming and stay after school to
    practice running. This caused
  • his web feet to be badly worn, so that he was
  • only average in swimming. But average was
  • quite acceptable, so nobody worried about
  • that- except the duck.

83
Personality
  • The rabbit started at the top of his class in
running, but developed a nervous twitch in his
leg muscles because of so much make-up work in
    swimming.

The squirrel was excellent in climbing, but he
encountered constant frustration in flying class
because his teacher made him start from the
ground up instead of from the treetop down. He
developed Charlie horses from overexertion, and
so only got a C in climbing and a D in running.
84
Personality
The eagle was a problem child and was severely
disciplined for being a non-conformist. In
climbing trees he beat all the others to the top
of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to
get there.
Story from Charles Swindoll
85
What is the moral of the story?
Personality
86
Personality Development
Personality
  • The study of human behavior was first developed
by the Greek Scholar Hippocrates, the father of
modern medicine, around 400 BC. He identified
four body fluids that he believed determined a
    persons behavior.
  • In A.D. 149 a Roman physiologist by the name of
Galen proposed a temperament theory that built on
    Hippocrates observations. His four temperaments

CHOLERIC extroverted/task-oriented type,
SANGUINE extroverted/people-oriented
type, PHLEGMATIC introverted/people-oriented
type, MELANCHOLY introverted/task-oriented
type.
87
Personality Development
Personality
  • Scientific research shows that, as individuals
  • we are powered by either our
  • outgoing or our reserved approach to life,
  • our direction is steered either towards
  • tasks or toward people.
  • Most human behavioral scientists either agree
with Hippocrates Galen or have only tweaked his
basic findings slightly (sometimes only by
    changing the terminology)

88
Personality Development
Personality
  • In 1928, William Marston, a psychologist authored
The Emotions of Normal People, which
introduced the D.I.S.C. letters in describing the
    four temperaments.
  • In 1977, John G. Geier Dorothy E. Downey
    developed the Performax Personal Profile
System, which was a personal assessment used by
    business industry, based on Marstons
    D.I.S.C.

89
Personality DevelopmentNature vs. Nurture
Personality
  • 35 of your personality is genetically based
(Nature) (In 1979 the University of Minnesota
conducted a study entitled Twins Reared Apart,
which revealed convincing evidence that much of
our personality is inherited. A similar study at
Indiana University produced the same results.)
  • Another 50 of your personality is shaped in
childhood development up to the age of 6
    (Nurture)
    (Parents have a great influence
on their childrens personality beware of
attempting to make all of your children act the
    same.)
  • The remaining 15 of your personality development
comes from the rest of childhood adolescence.
  • The Holy Spirit of God is the only influence that
can effect change in your natural temperament or
    your nurtured personality.
  • (Unfortunately most Christians never allow God
to completely change their temperament to His
    standards see Galatians 522-23)

90
Personality DevelopmentNature vs. Nurture
Personality
  • Your past influences your personality, but
doesnt have to control it, the choice is yours.
You are capable of growth and change.
  • Major events or crises in your adult life can
have a permanent effect on your personality.
  • In order to succeed in family, personal, ministry
business relationships, people learn to adapt
    adjust their style.
  • These learned skills are not a persons normal or
natural preference, but they are necessary for
    their life needs.
  • Holy Spirit is working in the lives of Christians
to conform them to the image of Christ (Romans
    89, 2 Corinthians 318).

91
Success at work ministry depends a lot on your
people skills.
92
Personality
People Skills Are Important
  • By learning more about your behavior that of
others, you greatly improve good relationships
  • In Disaster Relief Ministry, there is a great
need for people who can relate well to others.
  • No one is outstanding at everything, you need
others to supplement your weaknesses with their
    strengths.
  • When two different people dont get along, it is
usually a problem of inflexibility. No one wants
to move out of their comfort zone.
  • Some people believe everyone thinks and makes
decisions just as they do. The Bible is very
clear that God has made each of us unique.

93
Personality
People Skills Are Important
  • By understanding the unique way God has made you,
you can learn to love people and appreciate their
    differences.
  • God made each of us different,, not worse than
others, not better but different. These
    differences often cause difficulties in
    relationships.
  • The Bible is also very clear that Christians are
to love care for other people.

94
Jesus described the mark of a true disciple like
this

By this all men will know you are my
disciples, If you love one another. John

I. Projected Concept (MOST responses) The
Projected Concept reflects how you think others
want you to behave or how you want them to see
you. This is the mask people assume in order to
achieve success. The roots of your Projected
Concept lie in everything you have experienced
from childhood to early adulthood -
family, friends, schooling, religion. By early
adulthood, most people have decided how they must
act to get what they want in life, and that
behavior becomes their Projected Concept.

II. Private Concept (LEAST responses) This is
your basic behavior - what you are down deep.
This behavior is the product of heredity and
early environment. People display this behavior
in relaxed situations (at home or with friends),
when they dont sense the need for the mask of
the Projected Concept, or in stressful situations
when maintaining the mask is too difficult.

Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Ministry
  • Ministry is the heart of the Christian life.
    (Mat. 2028)
  • God has uniquely shaped each individual for
    specific ministries.

179
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Ministry
  • God has given all his children a SHAPE that can
be developed and used in ministry. Everyone is a
10 in some area. Everyone has something to
offer. Developing and using your SHAPE and that
of your crew is an act of good stewardship and of
    service.

180
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Ministry
  • The evidence of the right match between my
SHAPE and my Disaster Relief ministry is
  • fulfillment and results.

181
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About The Body of Christ!
  • Disaster Relief, like the church, is to operate
on the basis of spiritual gifts, rather than
elected office. We do not elect people to
positions. A mans gift makes room for him...
    Proverbs 18 16

182
S.H.A.P.E.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
  • About The Body of Christ!
  • Disaster Relief, like the church is a family ,
not a business an organism, not an
    organization. Therefore we streamline the
structure in order to maximize ministry and
minimize maintenance. We do not bury ministries
    under procedures.

183

S.H.A.P.E.
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
  • About The Body of Christ!
  • The greater good of the whole Body must always
take priority over the needs of any single
ministry. There is no place for turfism in
Gods Family. Disaster Relief Ministry needs to
be a part of your churchs overall strategy to
    make Christ famous.

184
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About The Role Of Blue Hats !
  • The objective is to mobilize and equip an army of
servants who are maximizing their unique gifts,
heart, abilities, personality, and experiences in
a meaningful place of service through Disaster
    Relief.

185
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Accountability!
  • Everything in D.R. or Church Ministry rises or
falls on leadership. No ministry can exceed the
    commitment of those leading it.

186
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Training!
  • Every D.R. leader and servant is a learner . The
moment you stop learning, you stop leading.

187
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Diversity of Ministry!
  • Just as there are seasons of Disaster, there are
seasons in D.R. Ministry. If an area of service
isnt fulfilling anymore, move to a place where
it is. There are no sacred cows and many places
    to serve!

188
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
  • About Diversity of Ministry!
  • Your primary ministry commitment should be in the
area where you are gifted. Your secondary
ministry includes serving in any other area of
the Body where you are needed.

189
Disaster Relief SHAPE Values
S.H.A.P.E.
