1
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
  • EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE

2
LEARNING OUTCOMES
  1. Define somatotype and know the three types of
    physique.
  2. Know how difference in physique may effect
    performance and success in sport.
  3. Be able to state various types of sporting
activities affected by different types of
    physique.

3
STARTER TASK
  • b) During the half-time break of a football match
the players will drink lots of water. Explain why
    this is necessary.

4
ANSWERSa)
  • b)
  • When you exercise you lose water through sweat.
This needs to be replaced in order to avoid
    dehydration and onset of fatigue.

5
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 1
  • What type of things do you think will effect a
persons ability to perform and be successful in
    sporting activities?
  • For example
  • Football
  • Badminton
  • Rugby
  • Basketball.
  • Running (aerobic and anaerobic).

6
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 2
  • Physique means the way the body is put together
    or body type.
  • Somatotyping basically describes the type of body
    build of a person.
  • Size , weight and shape may dictate the type of
sport a person can participate with reasonable
success (i.e. a tall person may be well suited to
    high jump or basketball).
  • These body types are classified into three
    groups
  • Endomorph.
  • Mesomorph.
  • Ectomorph.

7
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 3
Extreme enDomorph think D for dumpy.
  • Generally referred to as round or pear shaped.
  • Fatty upper arms.
  • Thin wrists.
  • Wide hips.
  • Narrow shoulders.
  • Fatty thighs.

8
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 4
Extreme mesoMorph think M for muscles.
  • Muscular.
  • Broad shoulders.
  • Strong forearms and thighs.
  • Narrow hips.
  • Often referred to as an inverted triangle shape.

9
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 5
Extreme ecTomorph think T for thin.
  • Often referred to as skinny.
  • Narrow face and high forehead.
  • Narrow shoulders.
  • Thin, narrow chest and abdomen.
  • Slim hips.
  • Long limbs, quite tall.

10
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 6
  • A triangular graph with 3 axes ranging from 1 to
7 are used to relate a persons physique to three
    extremes.

EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 7
  • People do not tend to be extreme endomorph,
    mesomorph or ectomorph.
  • The average person would be 444.
  • Most people range between 344 and 352.

12
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 8
  • Sumo wrestlers need strength, weight and low
    centre of gravity.
  • These are strong endomorphic and some mesomorphic
    features.

13
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 9
  • High jumpers need to be tall and light but with
    powerful muscles.
  • These are strong ectomorphic and some mesomorphic
    features.

14
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 10
  • Qs. What type of activities are Endomorphs best
    suited to?
  • Wrestling.
  • Shot-putting.

15
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 11
  • Qs. What type of activities are Mesomorphs best
    suited to?
  • Decathlon.
  • Swimming.
  • Gymnastics.
  • Body building.

16
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 12
  • Qs. What type of activities are Ectomorphs best
    suited to?
  • Long distance running.
  • High jumping.

17
EXERCISE AND PHYSIQUE 13
  • Using the list of sporting activities below

    next slide.
