Title: Volunteer Committee

1
Volunteer Committee
The impersonal hand of government can never
replace the helping hand of a neighbor.

2
Volunteer CommitteeOne of the most
challenging and satisfying committees to work on.
Volunteers form the backbone of Habitat and your
build will be tackling a largely untapped
resources women!
  • Volunteer coordination takes strong
organizational skills and good people skills.
  • Cultivate relationships with area churches,
    corporations, civic organizations, neighborhood
groups and individuals, recruiting volunteers for
committee and construction work, as well as for
    support services.
  • Arrange speaking engagements for the project
coordinator to speak about the upcoming event and
the need for volunteers. Ask homeowners to share
their experiences, etc. Be sure to have volunteer
sign-up sheets at each speaking engagement.
  • Design and use signup sheets to obtain names,
addresses, and contact phone numbers and the days
volunteers are available to work. This list will
be essential when preparing for construction
    workshops.
  • Set up an application calendar and follow it
    carefully Training seminars for construction
    volunteers, House and crew leader
    meeting/training, etc.
  • Recruit 2535 volunteers per house, per work
day. It is essential not to assign too many
people e house. Too many volunteers not only
makes it difficult for the leaders to provide
adequate leadership, but it also means that some
volunteers will have a less than quality
    experience.
  • Work with your Construction committee to ensure
you have enough, and not too many, volunteers for
each workday. If you have more volunteers than
you need for a particular day, encourage some of
them to sign up for another day.
  • Recruit volunteers for committees and recruit
    support service volunteers (food, security,
    transportation, etc.)
  • Register volunteers - that way, you can know in
advance what skill level to expect from each
volunteer and you will be able to regulate the
number of volunteers on site each day. You will
need more at the beginning of the week, for
example, when doing framing and trusses, and can
reduce the number when the house is at the
    trim-work stage.

  • Respond to queries promptly with a confirmation
email/letter and a Release and Waiver of
    Liability form. The confirmation email/letter
should include such details as the dates of
upcoming construction workshops, as well as a
list of basic tools each volunteer will be
    expected to bring.
  • Maintain a database of all volunteers and create
name badges for volunteers and committee members.
  • Coordinate with construction staff/volunteers in
    planning construction workshops.
  • Hold an orientation meeting for all volunteers
    before starting construction. Topics should
include how Habitat works, an introduction of
  • the homeowner, building schedules,
recognition of donors and celebrities who will be
    participating.
  • If required, arrange lodging for any out-of-town
    volunteers.
  • Ensure that all volunteers are informed of the
    schedule.
  • Set up and staff a registration/general
information tent on the build site this is also
a good location for lost and found.
  • When the build begins, you will receive a number
of volunteers who have not signed up. Do not
overload the house with volunteers. Advise
  • the volunteers that you have enough for that
day and ask them to sign up for another day.
