14A Few Observations
- There are growing numbers of students in our
country - There are large numbers of churches who are
ministering specifically to students - Student baptisms are not keeping pace with the
population growth - Large numbers of students are graduating from
church when they graduate from high school (65
of 18-30 year olds stop attending church
regularly for at least a year between the ages of
18 and 22)
15The Dropout Rate
- 70 percent of young adults ages 23-30 stopped
attending church regularly for at least a year
between ages 18-22 - The remaining 30 of 23-30 year olds remained in
church during those years, although with varying
levels of frequency - Among all 18-30 year olds, including those 18-22
year olds who may still stop attending, 65 have
stopped attending church regularly for at least a
year between the ages of 18 and 22
Base 18-30 year olds who attended a Protestant
church regularly for at least a year in high
school (Ages 18-30 n1,557 ages 23-30 n732)
16While attending regularly only 20 of church
dropouts planned to leave church after high school
After high school, Im leaving church!
Q5. Thinking back to your days of regular church
attendance in high school, had you planned on
taking a break from church once you finished high
school? Base S3 Yes (n615)
17Who attends church is constantly changing, but
the number drops sharply between ages 17-19
- Churn occurs at every age some attendees are new
or returning to church at the same time others
are leaving - About two-thirds attended twice a month or more
at a given age under 14, 14, 15, and 16 - Declines in twice-a-month attendance that occur
at age 17, 18, and 19 cut the number attending at
this rate in half - The lowest twice-a-month attendance levels occur
at age 22
18Family Influences
- Most young adults indicate they had positive
family influences, prior to turning 18 - 76 indicate Parents or family members attended
church regularly - 73 indicate Parents or family members genuinely
liked church - 66 indicate Parents or family members provided
spiritual guidance
- Not surprisingly teen attendance mirrors their
parents - Only 19 of teens who regularly attended worship
indicate their parents/family did not attend
church regularly - Only 8 of teens who had parents/family attending
church regularly indicate they did not attend
worship regularly themselves
Q6b. Please indicate whether each of the
following statements applies to your life prior
to turning 18 and whether it applies to your life
through ages 18-22. Base All (n1,023)
19Adults from church investing in teens
- Based on the indications of young adults the
investment of multiple adults from church in
their personal and spiritual life as teens
directly corresponds with a lower likelihood of
dropping out of church

20An Important Question
- As student ministry continues to mature, are we
developing - students, or
- student ministries?
21- The solution is not to find a better plan for
student ministry, but to find a biblical model
for student development.
22Building a Biblical Model of Student Development
23One Last Question
- How is this strategy for student development
carried out in the home and the church?
