The Band Their Mission
  • The word ENTRAIN means to take asymmetrical or
periodic rhythms and to synchronize them.
Scientists, athletes and musicians have long
considered rhythm as an integral part of all
activity. Based on Marthas Vineyard, Entrain was
founded by Tom Major, drummer, composer and
    artistic director and Sam Holmstock,
percussionist, trombonist and folklorist in 1993.
It is based on the idea that drums and rhythm are
the beginning of all music. Recipients of a
Boston Music Award for Best Live Show, their
mission is to offer audiences of all ages and
backgrounds great songs based on danceable
rhythms of the African Diaspora and a positive
lyrical message. Members of the current band are
from all over southeastern New England and
reflect a cross section of musical influence and
    experience

The Band Their Mission
  • The band travels widely throughout the US, the
Far East and Canada, performing not only at
schools but festivals, clubs, formal concerts,
community and special events. Their debut self
titled album was released in 1994 on their own
Dolphin Safe label. Their 5th and most recent CD
is a live recording featuring performances of
some of their most popular songs. Their goal is
to help create understanding and positive
appreciation between all people of all
backgrounds in the hope of contributing to the
creation of a more peaceful, humane and just
world for everyone through music. The workshops
can be customized in length and price to meet
    time and budget requirements.

In School Workshop
  • This dynamic cultural workshop offers middle and
high school students an experience into the rich
history behind Pop Music in the Western
Hemisphere. Pop music has been influenced by and
developed out of the melding of African folkloric
music and European song forms. The Blues in the
United States, Salsa in Cuba and Samba in Brazil
are all components of the workshop. Its an
entertaining blend of music history and live
    performance.

6
The Workshop
  • While these influences have been combined in many
ways to form new styles of music, it is the rein
fusion of these folkloric rhythms that has given
    Entrain its unique sound.
  • The African influence is evident in the drums
which are prevalent in the music of Entrain. The
Conga drums, which originated in Africa,
developed further in Cuba and are now a staple of
American pop music. The Djembe from Sub-Saharan
Africa is becoming ever more popular in the
United States for its high clear sound. These are
combined with the Timbales from Cuba and the
American Kit or trap drums which evolved to take
the place of an entire ensemble of drummers.

The Workshop
  • The polyrhythmic nature of many of the song
forms, the call and response and rhythm patterns
also reflect the Afro-Caribbean influence. All
this of course is combined with the modern
electric guitar, bass and keyboard instruments.
    Other instruments include Bongos, Cowbell,
Guiro, Claves, Maracas, Djun djun, Pandeiro,
    Talking drum, Frotoir and Shekere.

9
The Workshop
  • The live performance portion of the program is
    captivating. Songs performed include
  • Hear That Long Snake Moan-This is a song with
strong groove based on the Haitian rhythm known
as Congo and Jamaican Dance Hall style.
  • Mother Street-Written with a beat we like to call
the Bo Diddley Beat it is the most fundamental
    rhythm to come from Africa.

of New Orleans this song reflects the melding of
diverse influences to create a truly American
    sound.
  • Dance of the Cuban Cigar-Inspired by the
rhythms of Cuba it features the Mambo and
    Mozambique rhythms
  • Rise Up-This song bridges the gap between

Testimonial
  • January 23, 2006
  • To Whom It May Concern,
  • My name is Michael Kelley and I am the Assistant
Principal at Profile School in Bethlehem, N.H. I
am very pleased to be writing a letter of
recommendation for the band Entrain and their
educational component, Edutrain. I had the
pleasure of working with the band last spring.
The band came up to the North Country to perform
in our school and also for a firemans fundraiser
that evening. The school performance was
absolutely phenomenal and many of our students
continue to ask me when the band will be back to
perform. Entrains music speaks for itself but
their educational component was top notch. They
performed music from all over the world through
    an excellent presentation that combined
instrumental demonstration and a description of
the historical origins. Our students and staff
were extremely impressed with the informational
material as well as the wonderful music. I spoke
with one of our proficient percussion students
after the show and he told me that he had a whole
new outlook on the way to approach playing
    drums.
  • I would not hesitate for a second in recommending
Entrain for a school function. For a
professional band, they were incredibly flexible
with their own needs and put on a show that our
students and staff still talk about. Please
dont hesitate to call me if you have any further
questions at school (603-823-7411) or at home
    (603-823-8009).
  • Sincerely,
  • Michael J. Kelley
  • Assistant Principal/Profile School
