First Outbreak in Manyas
  • In a free range turkey holding in
    Manyas/Balikesir.
  • The local veterinary service quarantined the
    holding on Thursday 6 October 2005.
  • 1.700 of the 1.800 birds had died. The remaining
    100 live birds were culled immediately.
  • The notification was sent to OIE on 07 October
    2005.

Outbreak in Igdir Province and Other Recent
Outbreaks
  • 15 December 2005 Sudden poultry deaths in
    Aralik/Igdir.
  • Quarantine measures taken by stamping out poultry
    herd.
  • Laboratory tests by Veterinary Control and
    Research Institute in Bornova, H5 virus was
    detected.
  • The notification was sent to OIE.
  • 16 outbreaks in backyard poultry flocks in 9
    provinces, 2 of these provinces (Yozgat and
    Aydin) also have positive results for wild birds
    (pigeon, swan, sparrow and wild duck).
  • Positive results were found only in wild birds
    (pigeon and wild duck) in Ankara, Erzincan and
    Bitlis provinces.
  • As for 13 January, 32 suspect cases are under
    investigation besides the 9 provinces where
    outbreaks have been already detected additional
    15 provinces

Challenges and General Measures
  • National and Local Disease Control Centers
    activated.
  • Protection and Surveillance zones established.
  • Susceptible animals are culled with compensation.
  • Animal movements strictly controlled.
  • Biosecurity measures increased.
  • Check points to control illegal movements.
  • Clinical, serological, virological surveillances.
  • Hunting is banned.
  • Public awareness emhasized.

International Cooperation
  • Turkey has taken all necessary measures to fight
    against this virulent disease.
  • Cooperation proposals have been received from EU,
    USAID, WB, OIE, FAO and other International
    Organisations.
