  • Name Pierre Poulin
  • Age 31
  • Profession Robot programmer, mechanical
    design.
  • Scholarship Degree in mechanical design.
  • Hobby Quad bike riding, modeling,
    rock-climbing.

BIG!
  • Project overview
  • how it all started! The Neptune project influence
and it's all in the gene...
  • from 1 atm to dry-ambient the pressure choose
    for me!
  • other considerations money, time, work place,

BIG!
  • Budget
  • Total budget planned 1500 cdn.
  • Spend today 700 for the frame, ballast system,
    plumbing and windows.
  • Supplied by my father the air cylinder, the pony
    tank, the 1 stage regulator.
  • Electrical planned 650 for 2 minn-kota 28lbs
    and 2 deep-cycle batteries.
  • Im pretty confident to be able to achieve the
    budget I have set.

5
BIG!
  • The Two Phases
  • A budget safe choice...
  • Phase I to have a ship that is air-tight, have
ballast system operational, all safety features,
and can raise and drop into the water without
    problem.
  • Phase II will feature everything electrical.
    motors and light.

6
BIG!
  • Timeline
  • project started on January 2003.
  • phase I should be completed during winter
    2003-2004.
  • phase II (complete project) should be completed
    for next summer 2004.

BIG!
  • Specifications
  • Displacement 1092 lbs.
  • Habitable volume 17.5 cf.
  • Over-all dimensions 77" long, 34" wide, 38"
    high.
  • Air supply one 220 cf cylinder at 2000 psi. (12
time the habitable at 1 atm)
  • Intended operating depth 30 feet.
  • Max depth 250 feet. (the 125 psi system could
not blow ballast deeper then 250 feet)

12
BIG!
  • Safety Features
  • drop weight can be dropped from inside or outside
    the sub
  • pony tank inside.
  • ballast can be operated from outside (divers)
  • flooding valve.
  • approximately 12 hours of autonomy at 30 feet.
  • independent small air reserve for emergency
    ballast operation.
  • hatch can be opened from in and outside of the
    sub.
  • air regulator for external diver.

13
BIG!
  • Habitable pressure control
  • The 3 alternatives
  • scuba regulator
  • pressure relief valve
  • natural pressure equalisation.

14
BIG!
  • Buoyancy Control
  • the use of a 5/3 pneumatic valve, pneumatic
    cylinder and piston.

15
BIG!
  • Propulsion
  • 2 minn-kota 12V 28 pound of thrust each.
  • One on each side of the sub.

16
BIG!
  • Ballast
  • I have decided to build soft ballast but they can
be used as variable ballast tank when I close a
valve. The ballast can be operated even if sub is
    upside down.

17
BIG!
  • Pressure relief valve
  • I will use a scuba diver first stage pressure
relief valve to go from 2000 psi to 125 psi.

18
BIG!
  • The Neptune Project
