What is Life?
  • Life is a multi-faceted concept with no simple
    definition
  • Building LEGOs with Mazz
  • Quinn DelVal (age 9)

How do we fit in?
  • Where do we fit in the classification of all
    organisms?
  • What is a classification?
  • Why be classified?
  • We are in the Kingdom Animalia and are Mammals!

We are part of a Biosphere
  • Biosphere Zone of air, land and water where
    living things are found.

Humans Change Ecosystems
  • Can you think of an example of how we change
    ecosystems?
  • Historical examples
  • Current examples
  • Why should we worry about this, are their
    concerns?

Human Activity can make Natural Disasters Far
Worse
Pollution has destroyed many coral reefs the
waves that hit the shore are not
buffered. Mangrove forests have been cut down to
make room for fishing, shrimping, beaching the
forests helped to reduce and soak up the water
that reached shore. Hotels and cheap housing were
built for tourism in places where waves can cause
tremendous damage. Tourism also means that many
people are now in areas that previously were
sparsely habited.
19
How do we study Biology?
  • Pose and Test Theories
  • Cell Theory--All organisms are composed of cells.
  • Biogenesis--All life comes only from Life.
  • Evolution--All living things have a common
ancestor, but each is adapted to a particular way
    of life.
  • Gene--Organisms contain coded information that
    dictates function, form and behavior.

20
Scientific Method
  • Scientists use the Scientific Method to test
    Theories.
  • Generate an Observation
  • Pose a Hypothesis
  • Perform Experiments
  • Analyze Results
  • Reach a Conclusion--does the date support or
    refute our Theory?

Why Experiments in Labs?
  • Control Control Control.
  • Lab Experiments can prevent variables
  • Variable Factor that can cause observable change
    and through results off.
  • Control Subject to all experimental steps EXCEPT
    the experimental Factor.

Science has Improved our Lives!
  • Antibiotics--Penicillin, others?
  • Vaccines--Polio, Measles, Smallpox, others?
  • Cell Biology--Cancer Research, others?
  • Genetics--Basis for Disease, others?
  • Physics--Electricity!, others?
  • Engineering--Roads, Bridges, Buildings, Planes,
    Trains, Bikes, others?
  • fermentation--Civilization!

26
Science has also opened up Pandoras Box
  • Biowarfare--The Stand, Anthrax letters, Current
    worries?
  • Nuclear Weapons--Does North Korea really have
    them?
  • Genome--Insurance issues, Selecting offspring?
  • Others?

Ethics and Information
  • One of your roles in our society is to help
determine how future technologies should be used
    and regulated.
  • To make the best decision possible, you need to
    be informed!
  • My Goal is to help you to become informed!
