Bis-amidinium cations were designed as potential
tetra H-bond donors (Figure 1) 1. These
compounds are suitable for interacting through
both H-bonding and electrostatic interactions
with anionic metallic building blocks such as
Mo(CN)84-, MIII(CN)63-, FeII(CN)5NO-,
MII(CN)42-, MIVCl62- and FeIIICl4-, that
act as H-bond acceptors. Depending on the nature
of the spacers S and S of the organic dication,
different types of structures were generated and
characterised by X-ray diffraction on single
crystals. In all cases, strong H-bonds and
electrostatic charge-charge interactions were
observed. The connectivity pattern defining the
dimensionality of the network is directly related
to geometric features of the organic dication and
the anionic metallic unit.

Chiral networks
The right match between (i) the organic tecton
(size and shape) (ii) the nature of metallic
building bloc, enables to address the
dimensionality of a organic-inorganic network.
Further steps towards physical properties
(optical, magnetic) of the networks are in
progress.
