Title: Get Involved 2
1Get Involved 2
..involving local people in student
learning about health and social care at the
University of Liverpool
Who pays? The various parts of the Faculty of
Medicine where people are working helped this
year by 20,000 from the Teaching Quality
Enhancement Fund to support the development of
ideas, training and support, evaluation and
dissemination of how things work as well as
peoples fees and expenses where they are not
otherwise available at the moment
Whos involved? Lots of people! Everyone has
experience of using health or social care
services, and an interest in using their
experience to help students to learn
What are people doing? People are working with
university staff to Plan - what 3rd year
Medical students need to learn about
communication skills - the best ways to involve
people with experience in Radiotherapy
courses Work on a project- with small groups of
first year Occupational Therapy students who are
learning about Self Care and Mobility Run a
workshop where Radiotherapy students can meet
up with people who have had radiotherapy to
discuss issues and experiences Give lectures to
large interprofessional groups in the School of
Health Sciences who are learning about
Communication Skills, and to smaller groups of
students of Diagnostic Radiography
How is it organised? Get Involved 2 builds on
the Getting Involved project which was part of
Interprofessional Education at the University of
Liverpool. It is managed by a Steering Group
which includes the Forum of Carers and Users of
Services (FOCUS) people involved as patients
and service users, and university staff. Get
Involved 2 is co-ordinated by Elspeth Mclean,
Staff Development Officer, School of Health
Sciences and Terry Williams, Co-ordinator, FOCUS
What do students, staff and local people think
about how it works? FOCUS monitors peoples
experience of working with staff and students,
and can deal with any issues that arise. The
views of students, staff and people who have
been involved are being collected by Rob Hughes,
an independent evaluator who is using what he
finds to compile a report. It will include
recommendations for how to make involving people
work really well for everyone available from
February 2007!
