KEF and UWA
  • Between August 2000 and December 2002 KEF
    invested over 750K at UWA
  • From a purse of 20.2 million
  • Biology/Physics principally benefited
  • CREH has already got a bid accepted for 2003 for
160K and has another bid ready for a further
    200K
  • Note this funding is NOT for core RAE research

5
I need your HELP
6
Why..?
  • I dont have all the answers
  • Im new to UWA and therefore its culture
  • What I want to do is create sustainability
  • Hence I need your input/creativity
  • I KNOW that you are very busy
  • I want to help remove any impediments
  • Yes I know this is not 1st or 2nd Mission, but
soon it will have a considerable impact on our
traditional funding if the Welsh Assembly
    Government has its way

7
What does an EC do..?
  • Tasked with
  • S1 - Emplacing Enterprise into each departments
curriculum even if its just one lecture/module
  • S2 - Improving the relationships with Business in
our Geographical Region and building capacity for
    HE level education to business
  • S3 - Improving the understanding of Enterprise
for every member of the UWA staff
  • S4/5 - Greasing the funding wheels from KEF and
other funding vehicles e.g. Currently, there
are plans to move all European Bids into the HEED
    pot
  • Other than that I stare at my navel all day!!!

Enterprise in the Curriculum
  • Even though Students study a core subject at UWA
most are unlikely to earn a living and pay off
    their debts from that subject
  • In the five departments selected above, a survey
of the modules available on the UWA website shows
that not one module across the subject areas has
    an Enterprise/Business/Professional Development
    focus
  • I can help fund/create a lecture, series of
lectures or modules that explicitly deliver in
the context of your subject areas

12
There are some significant departmental
opportunities here
  • Ability to substantiate the message that UWA
undertakes to ENSURE employability after the
course currently our Marketing Message is
    somewhat obscured
  • Can be easily dove-tailed with the existing
    Careers provision
  • Other Universitys are engaging this Marketing
    Message more aggressively
  • Take a look at Warwick!
  • http//www.warwick.ac.uk/careers/img/fds/cas
  • It wont be long before they expand this

13
So WHAT!
  • If I were looking for a place in university in
    addition to considering the prospective
    departments profile/competences/ucas offer I
would be strongly looking at employability
    after my degree
  • Perhaps now is the time to consider
enterprise/professional skills modules as a core
    of the UWA electives
  • If you were going to be 15-20K in debt after
graduation might you consider your life after
graduation when you choose your degree..?
  • Ill be undertaking a survey to determine this in
    the very near future

14
Personal Skills required 18 months after
Graduation
15
  • The skills employers were most likely to require
in the next 2-3 years were advanced IT/software
(33), followed by basic computing (21) and
technical/practical skills other than IT (18).
  • Employers' Skills Survey 2001
  • Students who graduate this summer expect to have
debts of at least 10,000 - an increase of 6,700
compared with 1999's graduates, a survey
    suggests.
  • http//news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/19395
    28.stm
  • Not including the new Fees arrangements!
