33What is RefWorks ?
- A Web-based citation manager and bibliography
builder - Used to create a personal database of citations
from online databases or text files - Insert citations while writing papers and
generate bibliographies in seconds
34RefWorks Advantages
- Web-based
- No software to download update
- Access your account(s) from any computer
connected to the Internet - Link to McMasters full-text through
- Can reformat citations from one style to another
in seconds - No limit on number of citations in database
35RefWorks Disadvantages
- Simplified version of the big reference
management software (e.g. fewer output formats
and import filters) - Your citations are only as good as the
information provided in the reference - Need to check your citations for completeness.
RefWorks doesnt write the information, it only
reads it!

- Accessible via Library Home Page (look in the
left navigation menu) - Direct URL

- In order to register (and use) RefWorks you must
be logged in to LibAccess when using it in the
library or off-campus. -
37RefWorks Sign up for an Individual Account
Supply name e-mail address
Create your own login and password
Click to Register You will receive an e-mail
confirmation message. It will also include
McMasters Group Code.
38RefWorks Accounts
- No limit on number of accounts
- Can have several accounts open at one time (open
new browser from Program menu) - Can share accounts
- Share password with others who can then
contribute to the database - Multiple users can access one account
simultaneously - Citations in your McMaster RefWorks account are
stored on a server in Ontario and are not subject
to surveillance under the U.S. Patriot Act.
39RefWorks Accounts
- If you leave McMaster
- you can convert your account to an individual
subscription (100 USD) - you can move your account if you have access to a
new organizational RefWorks subscription - Select Tools, Backup/Restore and make a backup of
your database (.zip or .rwb file) - In your new account, select Tools, Backup/Restore
and use the restore option to add the backup file
to your new account

references to make sure the fields are entered
correctly - HINT check author, title, periodical name,
volume, issue, publisher, page numbers, year of
