8How Much Wood is Enough
1MWh 3412KBtu, Assume 5 trees/cord,
acres/tree based on full spread
9According to the Kansas Forest Service 4.5
million acres of Kansas were forested in
pre-colonial times. Assuming 2.5 million acres
could again be forested, locust plantations could
be used to replace the coal fired plants.
10Whats the reality?
Only about ¼ of the state has enough water to
farm trees, all of which is in the eastern part
of the state. So only 13million of its 52366720
acres are available. Of that 13million acres
assume 50 is unavailable due to urban and
agricultural uses. That leaves 7.5million acres
available. More than enough.
