2Basic information on the Euro
- The Treaty of Rome (1957) declared a common
European market as a European objective with the
aim of increasing economic prosperity and
contributing to "an ever closer union among the
peoples of Europe". - The Single European Act (1986) and the Treaty on
European Union (1992) have built on this,
introducing Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and
laying the foundations for the single currency. - The elected governments of the EU together
created and developed the euro. The European
Council adopted the name "Euro" in Madrid in
December 1995. - On 1 January 2002 the euro banknotes and coins
were successfully introduced and became legal
tender in the 12 countries of the euro area. This
was the final step in a process which was started
formally in 1991 and led to the signing of the
Maastrich Treaty in 1992. The completion of the
cash changeover was a unique event, directly
affecting the lives of over 300 million people in
the euro area.

7EURO FEELINGS IN FINLAND
- When we got our Euros we spent more money because
it seemed like it was just little money. Now we
are just buying things without thinking how much
they really cost. We seldom think how much it
would be in marks, in our previous currency
before Euro. - If we still had our mark, we wouldnt buy so
expensive things! But now its easier to use the
same currency in other countries where there are
Euros in use. - One euro means in Finland about six marks. In
Finland some prices are higher now than before
Euro jeans for example could cost 200 marks but
nowadays the same jeans cost 40 euros which is
about 240 marks. Another example is a bus ticket
which was 5 marks for children and now it is
1euro and 10 marks for adults and now it is 2
euros.
8EURO FEELINGS IN ITALY
- The Euro has a different valuation from Lira. The
Lira was divided in more banknotes so it was
easier to use. Before Euro money our coins had a
very little value in Italy. Now one coin can be
very valuable. With the Euro we must be more
careful when spending coins. - In Italy some prices have been doubled since the
Euro came. Before Euro everything costs less, now
everything costs much, for example the jeans cost
100000 lire and now they cost 100 euros (the same
as 200000 lire), the shoes cost 150000 lire now
150 euros (the same as 300000 lire).
