NCME Mission
  • to provide manufacturing technology educators
with the tools and resources they need to be
successful. The future of the manufacturing
industry depends upon this countrys educators
    and business leaders.
  • The NCME works to provide them with best-of-class
and leading-edge products and services to
    successfully educate tomorrows manufacturing
    workers and leaders.

6
Manufacturing Education Resource Center -MERC
  • A national clearinghouse of resources for
educators and industry professionals with a vast
database of print, multimedia and online
resources, along with a powerful search engine
  • Designed to enable users to find and gain access
to materials and other resources that can enhance
    their teaching

7
MERC Overview
  • Created in 2003 to provide a clearinghouse for
    manufacturing education resources. Visit the
    NCME website!
  • http//www.ncmeresource.org/
  • This is the third of six webinars to be held
during the first three years of the project.

Objectives of this todays webinar
  • To help participants learn more about possible
methods and techniques for teaching RFID
    technology.
  • To answer questions and gain input from
participants on how to teach RFID technology and
    its application.

9
Paul Ranky
  • He is a Full Tenured Professor of Industrial and
    Manufacturing Systems Engineering at the
    Department of Industrial and Manufacturing
Systems Engineering at NJIT (New Jersey Institute
of Technology), with an additional faculty
    appointment with NJIT's IT (Information
Technology Program), as Professor of IT. NJIT is

Key concepts discussed
  • There is a great deal of RFID material on the
WWW some good and some not
  • Paul provides a collected set of materials for
his students on CD/DVD and then helps guide them
    to important material.
  • Students have access to much more then
    information than they need.

12
  • Paul does not teach a course in RFID, but RFID is
an important technology in the solution of many
    business problems.
  • A case study approach has been proven to work
    well for RFID
  • Real world cases and problems
  • Student designed solutions
  • Discussion and sharing of ideas

13
  • The new technology of an E-book is one of Paul
    Rankys specialty areas
  • The E-book contains virtual lab exercises that
    help teach students the fundamentals
  • No need to buy a lot of expensive equipment
  • Demonstration tags are often available at little
or no cost from the tag vendors

14
  • Plant visits, in person or virtual can provide
students with the opportunity to see the hardware
    in action
  • THE KEY IS THE SYSTEMS APPROACH
  • RFID is a technology
  • RFID may be a good solution, but maybe not
  • Get students to think of the big picture when
    designing a solution
