United Streaming - Terms
LogIn - A user must log in to the United
Streaming web site to access their school
account. This is a subscription web site. Search
- Search for videos on the United Streaming web
site Network Manager - On the United Streaming
web site, all videos which have been downloaded
or scheduled for download are listed here. The
actual videos are downloaded to the G drive on
the schools server. These videos will be
automatically deleted from the school server
after 14 days. Playlist - On the United
Streaming web site, this is your personal list of
favorite videos. There are no actual videos on
the Playlist. It works just like Favorites on
the Internet but is not stored on the hard drive
of the computer. Your Playlist is stored on the
United Streaming web site under your user name
and can be viewed on any computer when you log
in. Stream - Videos can be viewed directly
through the Internet without download. Streaming
videos works like streaming music through the
Internet. The video is playable while
downloading but will stop playing periodically
until the download is complete. This is not
available at school due to time restrictions (9
am - 3 pm) and amount of volume of the schools
server. Download - All videos must be
downloaded from the United Streaming web site
before viewing. No downloading may occur from
the web site while at school between 9 am and 3
pm due to high volume network traffic. There are
no restrictions downloading to a home PC. Burn
a CD - To permanently save videos and other
files, they must be burned to a CD. A computer
must be equipped with a CD or DVD burner and
software installed such as Roxio CD Creator. Jump
Drive - A jump drive or keydrive is a small
removable data storage device that uses flash
memory and a USB connector. Depending on the
manufacturer, this drive will hold up to two
gigabytes of information. The jump drive would
be an excellent storage device for videos.

Burning a CD
To burn your video(s) to a CD, open Roxio Easy
CD Creator 5. (Start/Programs/Roxio Easy CD
Creator 5/Applications/Easy CD Creator)Use
CD-Rs for one time burning. CD-RWs will allow
you to add to or delete files from the CD. This
would be the preferred method although the
CD-RWs are initially more expensive than the
CD-Rs.

1. Locate and highlight your saved video(s).
2. Click Add or drag your video(s) to this
section. 3. Notice how much space you have on a
CD. You can add many videos, or add all the
files needed for your unit. (blackline masters,
PowerPoint's, images. Etc.) 4. Click the red
Record button to begin recording your CD.
10
10
NOTE After you have finished recording your CD,
you will be asked if you want to save the layout
to the C drive. Click NO. Saving your videos
anywhere but on a CD (or Jump Drive) will defeat
the purpose of saving space on our servers.
Downloading and Saving Videos On Your Home
Computer
When you log in to United Streaming from home,
the web site will appear the same as it does at
school. You will be able to add to your Playlist
a and choose videos to download at night to the
school server via Network Manager ?. The only
thing you wont be able to do is quickly retrieve
your videos that have been downloaded to the
Network Manager. These videos reside on the
schools server which you do not have access to
from home. There are no restrictions on
Streaming s or Downloading d the videos from
your home. Please remember that if you have a
dial-up Internet provider, your download could
take HOURS! Download the video(s) to your desktop
or wherever you want to save them. Remember that
they take up space on your hard drive so it would
be a good idea to burn them to a CD and then
delete them off of your computer as soon as you
can. To burn CDs at home, follow the
instructions on your own CD burner (if you have
one). You can also save your videos, etc. on a
Jump Drive. This is a small portable drive that
connects to your computer using a USB port. (If
you have an older computer, you may not have this
capability.) Saving to a Jump Drive is just like
saving to a floppy or hard drive. It will show
up as another drive in My Computer.

Play Your Video
There are two ways to view your videos using the
Media Player on your computer or inserting the
video in a PowerPoint presentation.
Windows Media Player
Open Windows Media Player. (Start/Programs/Accesso
ries/Entertainment/Windows Media Player) Go to
File/Open and locate the video. (CD ROM,
etc.) Click Open. The video should automatically
play. If you go to View on the Menu bar of the
Media Player, you can choose Full Screen. (To
exit Full Screen, hit the ESC key.)
PowerPoint
To show your video using PowerPoint, go to
Insert/Movies and Sounds/Movie from File. Locate
your video and choose Insert. The video is small
but can be resized by clicking in it to see the
little white formatting boxes and dragging the
corners outward. Remember that the larger the
video, the fuzzier it becomes. To watch your
video, double click on the black video screen.
Or go to Slide Show/View Show. Click on the
video to start it. An advantage here is that you
can click on the video to pause it for a
teachable moment. IMPORTANT! If you want to
burn (save) your PowerPoint to a CD, make sure
you add the actual video into the CD layout along
with your PowerPoint. PowerPoint presentations
do not contain the video but a link to the video.
TIPTo make the background black on the slide, go
to Format, Background and click on the arrow for
colors. Then click Apply.

In Conclusion...
Remember that videos take up lots of space on our
server and/or computer. Having the server full
makes it run slower. The same goes for the
computers. Anyone using an old IBM knows that
means a virtual crawl! That is why it is
important to store the videos on CDs or Jump
Drives and delete them from your computer. The
benefits of using the United Streaming videos and
related teacher materials in your units far
outweigh the time you spend searching and
saving. Not only will you have quality videos to
utilize, images, correlation to state standards,
blackline masters and teachers guides are at your
fingertips to make your lesson a powerful
learning experience. As always, your CSS will be
available to help you get started!
Enjoy!!!!!
