Terminology in IEEE Standards
2
Terminology in IEEE Standards
  • Key building block in the standards development
    process
  • Forms the basis of communication in any field
  • Needs to leadnot followthe standardization
    process
  • Involves an understanding of
  • IEEE 100, The Authoritative Dictionary of IEEE
    Standards Terms
  • The role of Standards Coordinating Committee 10
(Terms and Definitions) in the development
    process
  • The role of the working group regarding
    terminology in standards

3
IEEE 100
  • IEEE 100, The Authoritative Dictionary of IEEE
    Standards Terms
  • Revised and published every four years
  • Sponsored by Standards Coordinating Committee 10
    (SCC10) on Terms and Definitions
  • Editorial support from
  • SCC10
  • IEEE Standards Department

4
IEEE 100 Scope and Purpose
  • Scope
  • Terms and definitions from approved IEEE
    standards
  • Those in the Definitions clause of a standard
  • Those in an IEEE terminology standard
  • Purpose
  • Provides a single source for all terminology that
has been formally defined in IEEE standards
  • Reflects the use of terminology across the IEEE
    Standards community
  • Provides a living archive/reference of the
language and communication used in the standards
    process

5
SCC10 Coordination
  • A requirement for all IEEE standards projects
  • Review of terms/definitions in the document
  • Are definitions properly written and placed in a
    separate Definitions clause?
  • Review of definitions against those in IEEE 100
  • When drafts are submitted for editorial
    coordination definitions are also reviewed.

6
Your RoleDeveloping Terminology in a Standard
  • Create a Definitions clause in your standard
  • Consult the IEEE Standards Style Manual for the
    correct definitions format (Visit
    http//standards.ieee.org/guides/style)
  • Use existing definitions whenever applicable
  • Consult the current edition of IEEE 100
  • Consult the International Electrotechnical
Vocabulary (IEV), published by the IEC
  • Write a new definition only if no appropriate
    definition currently exists
  • Consider that your definitions go into IEEE 100
  • Include terms and definitions relevant to your
standard so that other standard developing groups
can see them in IEEE 100
  • Write definitions as independent entities

7
Your RoleCreating a Terminology Standard
  • Determine if there is a need for a standard of
terms and definitions in your technical area
  • Create a terminology standard first in a new area
of standardization to establish a common language
base for all standards to use
  • Compile terms and definitions from various
    standards
  • Harmonize terms and definitions in a given area
  • Identify and define terms that are not already
    included in other standards
  • Submit a Project Authorization Request (PAR) to
    the IEEE-SA Standards Board
