Title: Internet

1
Internet
Safety
For Teens
2
The Internet is Universal Public. It is
found in
Schools
Homes
Businesses
3
The Internet can be accessed not only by
computers, but by cell phones, video-game
consoles digital assistants.
With these you can access chat rooms, and play
games with others locally or around the world.
4
No matter what age, the Internet can be a fun
place to hang out!
It is a great resource tool.
You can.
5
Chat with friends on Web Chat Rooms
E-Mail
Instant Messaging - IM
Peer-to-peer Newsgroups
Forums Bulletin Boards
Research Shopping..
6
BUT, it is important to know how to spot a
dangerous situation ahead of time to remain safe.
7
Cyberspace
What is Cyberspace?
Cyberspace is like a big city that is found on
your computer when you access the Internet
through an Internet provider, such as AOL or Road
Runner.
8
Like all cities there are hidden dangers and the
Internet is a DANGER looking to find vulnerable
people, especially TEENS.
Internet Predators are waiting for the right
person to come along to lure them into their
control.
9
What is Cyberstalking? Although there is no real
definition, it is generally considered as use of
the Internet, e-mail or other electronic
communications device to stalk or harass a
person. Stalking is defined as repeated
harassing or threatening behavior.
10
Can cyberstalkers really be dangerous?
YES! If a stalker takes it offline and you
start receiving snail mail or harassing phone
calls from the stalker or show up at your home,
they know where you live.
11
You should contact your local law enforcement
agency or the FBI immediately. When a stalker
takes it "offline" they are far more likely to
pose a physical threat to the individual being
stalked.

General Risks on the Internet
  • CYBERSTALKING
  • Harassment bullying
  • Situations behaviors of others that make you
    feel uncomfortable.
  • Putting yourself in physical danger.
  • Putting your family in Financial Risk
  • Hurting others getting in trouble
    yourself.

13
DANGERS
Internet Predators
14
Millions of teenagers around the world go
on-line daily most of them are safe, but...
Predicators come in all SHAPES, SIZES, AGES and
SEXES. They strike
without you even knowing.
15
The Internet Predator Process
  • They look for profiles that sound good might be
    easy.
  • They sit back and watch wait for the right
opportunity to connect with you when he/she has
    found a flaw.
  • Start to make a friendship, drawing you closer so
you will divulge information about you, your
    family friends.

16
  • The predator will start asking questions about
your body and whether you have had sex or not.
He/she will introduce you to sexual talk
    internet sex.
  • He/she will convince you that they understand you
that your family and friends do not.
  • They tell you that they can be your
    sex teacher.

17
  • Now they want to meet you in person.
  • They will build you up so they can get you into
    their control
  • They will tell you that you are a beautiful
person and you look and act older than you are.

18
Predators look for
TEENS who
will not tell anyone.
spend a lot of TIME ALONE.
are HURTING
are VULERABLE
are BORED
are REBELLIOUS
are ANGRY with family or friends

Facts from CyberAngels
20
The Internet is an excellent tool for learning
when used properly.
By the end of the year 2005, 77 million TEENS
will have access to the Internet.
Only 1/3 of the households that have Internet
access are proactively protecting their children
TEENS by using filtering or blocking software.
21
Approximately 75 of TEENS share personal
information about themselves, other family
members or friends on-line willingly.
22
Only 25 share information with their parents
about PREDATORS that they have encountered
on-line and have been approached or solicited sex
while on-line.
Teens want to be free from their parents
authority but naïve and inexperienced TEENS do
not know how a PREDATOR can manipulate them.
23
Never open email from someone you do not know.
Just delete strange e-mails. If in doubt about
it, ask your parents, guardian or another adult.
24
In the United States, 1 out of 5 TEENS who
regularly go on-line have received unwanted
sexual materials.
1 out of 33 TEENS will receive persistent sexual
material.
25
On-line PREDATORS will contact this year- 77 of
TEENS by the age of 14

22 of children ages 10 to 13
26
  • If you run into trouble on the Internet, or come
across something that makes you uncomfortable,
    tell your parents immediately.
  • Not everyone you meet online is who he or she
    says they are.

27
Don't believe everything you read. Just because
someone online tells you that they are 15 doesn't
mean they are telling the truth. Even adults
can't tell when a male pretends to be a female or
a 50 year old pretends to be a 15 year old.
28
Passwords are secrets. Never tell anyone
your password except your parents or guardian.
29
Use Netiquette Be polite to others online just as
you would offline. If someone treats you
rudely or meanly - do not respond. Online bullies
are just like offline ones - they WANT you to
answer (don't give them the satisfaction)

Keeping Internet predators at bay
Christina Long's life was full of promise. The
popular 13-year-old from Connecticut was an honor
student and cheerleader. But it seems Christina
had a troubling, secretive side. She was meeting
strangers over the Internet. Last May, Christina
was strangled to death, and police believe she
met her killer online.
31
This was taken from an article in the Corning
Leader newspaper-Corning, New York 2004
Corning police arrested a 29-year old male and
accused him of raping a 16 year-old he met online
in a chatroom. The relationship online
was about one month. He drove her from her
Albany, New York home where he forcibly had sex
with her.
32
Eleven-year-old Eddie Werner was sexually
assaulted and strangled to death after being
lured into a neighbor's house while collecting
money for a PTA-sponsored fund-raiser. The
15-year-old who committed the crime had
previously been sexually assaulted by a man he
met in an America Online chat room.
33
FBI Says Girl May Be With Man She Met On
Internet The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and
the FBI in Alabama are searching for 16-year-old
Jade Padgett. She was last seen on Wednesday
(4-13-05) leaving Sand Rock School. Jade is
5'6'' and weighs 115 pounds. She is believed to
be with a man in his 30's who she met on the
internet and she is believed to be in danger.
Information taken from Americas Most Wanted Web
site.
34
Police arrested a 35-year-old El Sobrante
scoutmaster and girl's soccer coach, after a year
of e-mailing and text messaging between the man
and a female officer masquerading as a
13-year-old girl.
35

you meet online, without first discussing it with
    your parents.

38
Chatrooms

is the MOST Dangerous part of the Internet for
predators to watch and monitor.

42
IF a PREDATOR gets your name and phone number
then the chances are high that he or she will
make a phone call, visit to your home or they
will try to meet you somewhere, tell your parents
immediately or call the police.
43
Web Pages/Sites teens should avoid.
  • Some sites contain adult images.
  • Some are racist, demeaning, violent.
  • Some have dangerous information posted that may
not be true and can cause injuries to you or
    others.

44
Some web pages have materials recruiting new
members into non-traditional religious groups or
cults.
CULTS
45
Some web pages contain information on drugs,
alcohol, tobacco, gambling, guns and weapons and
the means to gain access to them.
46
Some web pages contain Pornography
47
Pornography
any sexually explicit material," which is
material--textual, visual, or auditory--that
depicts sexual behavior or acts, or that exposes
the reproductive organs of the human body.
In November 1998, the U.S. Congress mandated a
study by the National Research Council (NRC) to
address pornography on the Internet.
48
Tips for Using the Intenet
It's okay to TELL while surfing the Internet, if
you find something that you don't like, makes you
feel uncomfortable or scares you, turn off the
computer and tell an adult.
49
Give yourself a break. Don't stay online too
long. Spend time with your family and friends
off-line.
50
Sign on the dotted line. -------------------------
---- Make and print out an online contract with
your parents or guardians. Ask your parents to
read the information for them on this site, so
they will be informed about Internet safety
issues.
