Why Reward and Recognition?
  • University Strategic Plan (2004-2008) that states
    The University will develop and implement a
    variety of recognition and reward mechanisms
    aimed at recruiting and retaining excellent
    academic and general staff and encouraging team
    and individual excellence.

Why Reward and Recognition?
  • Requirement 4 of the Higher Education
    Workplace Relations Requirements (HEWRRs) states
  • 'The Higher Education Providers (HEPs)
    workplace agreements, policies and practices must
    support organisational productivity and
    performance.
  • The HEPs workplace agreements, policies and
    practices must include a fair and transparent
    performance management scheme that rewards high
    performing individual staff.

Accelerated Incremental Progression
  • Payable when
  • Exceptional circumstances exist
  • or
  • A staff member has performed their duties in an
    exceptional rather than satisfactory manner.
  • Staff member must have participated in the PDR
    process and their performance must have been
    judged as exceptional.
  • No eligibility for an accelerated increment if
    their salary is already at the maximum of the
    salary range.

Bonus Payments
  • Payment of a lump sum either on individual or a
    group basis as a reward for outstanding
    performance that has achieved specific outcomes.
  • Such outcomes should be negotiated beforehand
    with a set of key performance indicators or
    targets.
  • Can be used to reward staff that have performed
    exceptionally but have reached the top of their
    incremental range.
  • Expressed as a specific amount or a percentage of
    an individuals base salary.

Informal Rewards and Recognition
  • These types of rewards can be used to provide a
    spontaneous, sincere and personal recognition
    of a staff members contribution with the
    advantage of being both easy to manage and
    relatively cheap to administer.
  • If delivered in a fair and consistent manner they
    contribute significantly to improved performance
    and morale.

Recognition
  • Praise or thank you in person and/or in front of
    others.
  • Email thank you.
  • Letter of appreciation with a copy to go on the
    staff members file.
  • Publicity in internal newsletter.
  • Special luncheon (either individually or as a
    group).
  • A perpetual recognition reward that is passed on
    after a set period (e.g. Top Dog).
  • Provide Business Cards.
  • Set up a notice board to display thank you memos,
    photos, progress towards goals etc.

Job Responsibilities
  • Selected to represent area at a meeting or attend
    as an observer.
  • Provide more autonomy in job.
  • Invite to provide comment on specific issues,
    policies etc.
  • Greater access to information.
  • Mentoring and work shadowing responsibilities.
  • Invite to co-ordinate and run School/Branch
    meeting.
  • Attend external conferences, meetings.
  • Allow more flexibility in working environment
    e.g. working from home.
  • Take on additional responsibilities or do aspects
    of job that are more personally rewarding.

  • Schedule a staff meeting off-site in a congenial
    atmosphere follow up with a casual social event.
