Title: Optimistic Thinking

1
Optimistic Thinking
  • An All systems re-design for the EMU Ballroom
    Foyer
  • A.Muller S.Woods

2
RE-Design
  • Re-design Concept In which lighting control
systems as well as spatial and acoustical
qualities are re-evaluated and monitored to have
a more positive impact on the gallery and its
    occupants
  • Design a gallery that encourages interaction and
    provide a stimulating atmosphere.
  • Problems Found and Assessed
  • Aesthetic Conditions
  • Day-lighting Conditions
  • Electric Lighting Conditions
  • Acoustic Conditions

3
Existing Conditions for evaluation
  • Dated architecture.
  • Passageway rather than gathering spot
  • Glare from west facing windows during evening
  • Low daylight levels during day
  • Lack of spatial definition make space stale and
    institutional
  • Insufficient recessed lighting. Uniform and
    doesnt highlight architectural features
  • Very live space, hard to carry on conversation.

4
Re-Design Strategies
  • Lighting will be used to emphasize certain
displays and imply zoning and circulation paths.
  • Sculptural ambient lighting, placed in strategic
locations will be added to create atmosphere.
  • Wood louvers will be introduced to control the
acoustics of the space and add depth and spatial
    definition.
  • The introduction of a cubby wall on the West and
North interior walls serves dual purpose as a
display unit as well as a day-lighting strategy.
  • The use of more suitable materials for this space
type and different custom items help to improve
the appearance as well longevity of the space.

5
Lighting Conditions
  • Zone 1 Sculpture Cubby shelves on the North and
    West Walls
  • Zone 2 Painting Light shelves to control glare
  • Zone 3 Photography Lower light levels for areas
that house delicate art and photographs.
  • Zone 4 Circulation The addition of partitions
    and other reflective surfaces.

6
Project 2 See the Light
  • Through our observation we noticed that the
    existing daylighting conditions create deep
shadows and bright spots during the evening. As
the sun set through the west facing windows, the
    glare was extremely unpleasant.

7
Illumination and Fabrication
  • Custom lamps are installed and various locations
throughout the gallery to add just enough light
without being too invasive to the gallery displays

8
Listening to the Spaces
  • Acoustically we found the space insufficient and
    in need of attention.
  • Live Space
  • In our redesign we strove to retain the positive
    acoustical qualities, while improving the
    negative ones.

9
Listening to Spaces
  • Acoustical Solutions
  • Drop Ceiling
  • Partition Walls
  • Wall Textile
  • Wood ceiling louvers
