  • The 24.2 million overseas visitors who came in
    2002 spent 11.7 billion in the UK.
  • Total visits for 2002 are 24.2 million visits
    spending to 11.7 billion.
  • In 2002 the UK ranked seventh in the
    international tourism earnings league behind the
    USA, Spain, France, Italy, China and Germany.

Employment There are an estimated 2.1 million
jobs in tourism in the UK, some 7.4 of all
people in employment in Great Britain. There are
more jobs in tourism than in construction or
transport. Approximately 163,000 of these jobs
are in self-employment. In 2002 there were
around 129,500 VAT-based enterprises in
tourism-related industries in the UK of which 77
are small firms with a turnover of less than
250,000.

Hotel and Restaurants In 2002, the turnover of
the hotel industry was 10.9 billion. This
represented an increase of 4 compared to 2002.
In 2002, average room occupancy for all serviced
accommodation throughout the UK was 58 (up from
57 in 2001). Average bed space occupancy was 44
(up from 42 in 2001).
