  • Culture Learned system of shared beliefs and
    ways of doing things that guides a persons daily
    behavior
  • Culture Region Culture dominates a particular
    region. People share culture traits.

  • Ethnic Groups Groups that share beliefs and
    practices learned from parent, grandparents, and
    ancestors.

Sharing a Country
  • Multicultural (multiethnic) When people from
    different cultures live in the same country. Look
    at map on pg. 76 in textbook.
  • Some countries have conflict because of different
    ethnic groups, others live in harmony

Race
  • Race based on inherited physical or biological
    traits.
  • This is not the same as ethnicity Review
    definitions to understand the difference
  • Also refer to page 76 in your text book
  • Some racial differences have developed in
    response to climate factors such as cold and
    sunlight.
  • Different cultures define race differently
  • Examples
  • East Africa height and facial features.
  • Other people different, obvious physical traits
  • Many times definitions of race are based on
    attitudes not actual biological differences.

  • Diffusion the spread of one cultures ways or
    beliefs to another culture.
  • May occur when people move, communication
    increases
  • Acculturation people borrow aspects of another
    culture as the result of long-term contact with
    another society.
  • Invention A new idea about how something can be
    made or done (e.g. printing press)
  • Innovation An improvement in a cultures
    technology (e.g. the Internet)

  • Symbol a sign that stand for something else.
    Ex. word, shape, color, flag

  • Behavior

  • Language, clothing, holidays
  • Symbols can help people communicate with each
    other and create a sense of belonging to a group.
