- In addition to the usual societal impacts that
happen in a moderate earthquake, this earthquake
raised the issue of safety of a nuclear power
plant in a moderate-to-great-magnitude
earthquake. - ,
4KASHIWAZAKI EARTHQUAKE
- A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 with a focal
depth of 10 km (6 miles) struck northwestern
Japan at 1015 a. m. on Monday, July 16th. - The city of Kashiwazaki (population of 90,000)
located in the Niigata prefecture was hit
hardest. - Because of Marine Day, a national holiday, most
people were at home, usually the safest place to
be in an earthquake.,
5KASHIWAZAKI POWER PLANT
- A fire was ignited in an electrical transformer
of the Kashiwazaki nuclear power plant, the
worlds largest with an output of 3.88 million
kilowatts. - Flames and black smoke poured from the plant for
2 hours before the fire was extinguished. - 315 gallons of water containing a small amount of
radioactivity (thought to be about one-billionth
of the legal limit) was leaked into the Sea of
Japan. .
6KASHIWAZAKI EARTHQUAKE
- 9 people were killed and 900 injured.
- 300 wood frame houses collapsed.
- 13,000 were evacuated to emergency shelters
- 1-meter-fissures destroyed roadways.
- Small tsunamis (20 cm waves) were generated.
- Bridges were buckled.
- Landslides closed roads.
- Trains were derailed and service to and from
Tokyo was suspended.
