Title: Interviewing

1
Interviewing
  • Business Procedures
  • Fall 2007

2
What is the purpose of an interview?
  • It is a chance for the employer to see if you
would be a good fit for the position.
  • It is also your chance to see if you would be a
    good fit with the company
  • Interviews are a mutual exploration. The goal is
for both the interviewer and interviewee to gain
    more information about each other

3
True or False?
  • The applicants only objective during an
interview is to provide information to the
    interviewer

4
  • False
  • The applicant is also trying to determine if the
position would be a good fit for him/her

5
True or False?
  • Interviewers often ask you questions to trick you
into saying things you dont mean.

6
  • False
  • Interviewers will ask an applicant questions to
determine if he or she is the right candidate for
    the job

7
  • An interview is not an interrogation. Try not to
be nervous and try to stay relaxed and
    comfortable.
  • The best way to do this is to be prepared!

8
  • Try your best to always come across positive in
an interview. If a question is asked that you
would answer negatively, rethink it with a
    positive spin.

9
Should you offer negative information about a
previous employer?
  • NO! Even if you are asked directly about what
you did not like about a previous employer,
    always focus on the positive
  • Did you get along with your previous
    supervisor?
  • WRONG He was a moron who didnt know what he
    was doing.
  • BETTER I learned a lot from him.

10
Which of the following ways are appropriate to
express your interest in the position?
  • a) Write a thank you note
  • b) Ask whats the next step? at the end of the
    interview
  • c) Ask if you can call with any questions that
    may come to you later
  • Answer all of the above

11
Being Prepared
  • There are many resources available including the
Internet, the library and the bookstore to get
lists of frequently asked interview questions

12
  • To best prepare yourself for the interview,
practice answering these questions in advance
  • We will be doing this in a few minutes

13
Non-Negotiables (things you must do)
  • Be early
  • Do not just be on time. Plan to arrive at least
    10 minutes early
  • Turn your cell phone off or put on vibrate
  • The interview will not last very long you do
not want to have to excuse yourself to answer
    your phone

14
  • Be prepared.
  • Have a copy of your resume available.
  • Make sure you have practiced answering common
    interview questions
  • Have questions ready to ask at the end of the
    interview
  • Never ask, so what does this company do? You
should research the company prior to the
    interview

15
  • Dress to impress! This is not the time to be
wearing flip flops and torn jeans.
  • Make eye contact with the interviewer when they
are asking questions and when you are answering.
  • Have a firm handshake (we will be working on this
    during the week.)

16
  • SMILE!!
  • Listen!
  • Before you begin forming the answer in your head,
    listen to the question
  • Give a brief answer. Dont ramble.
  • Be sure to thank the interviewer for their time.

5 Things Not to Say in a Job Interview
  • 1. I dont like working with people. Even if
the job youre applying for doesnt involve
working directly with customers, basic people
skills are a necessity for virtually all jobs.
  • 2. Whens payday? While you may be up to your
ears in bills, asking about money too soon gives
the impression thats all youre interested in.
  • 3. I hope I get this job. This is my sixth
interview this week! Showing enthusiasm is
great, but if you give off a rejected vibe,
interviewers will wonder if they should pass you
    over too.

18
  • 4. So, would you want to go out sometime? Sure,
the workplace can be a great place to meet
people, but displaying eagerness to hook-up isnt
professional.5. How much vacation do I get?
This question makes it seem like youre ready for
a break before you even start. Wait until at
least a second-interview to ask questions about
    benefits.
