  • In 1969, President Nixon announced the process of
    ending the war in Vietnam.

Paris Peace Accords
  • On January 17, 1973, a peace treat was signed by
    representatives from the US, North Vietnam, and
    South Vietnam. The accords contained the
    following stipulations
  • Cessation of hostilities and withdrawal of all
    troops
  • The return of all POWs
  • Exercise of South Vietnamese peoples right to
    self-determination
  • Reunification of Viet-Nam and relations between
    the North and South

Troop Withdrawal
  • By March 1973, all troops had been withdrawn from
    Vietnam.

The North invades the South
  • In 1974, the North Vietnamese decided to invade
    the South. The North broke the peace treaty and
    began their offensive in March of 1975.

Refugee Crisis
  • The invasion of the North Vietnamese in South
    Vietnam caused a refugee crisis. Civilians headed
    toward the sea in hopes to escape the soldiers.

  • Families tried every means to escape the
    advancing North Vietnamese soldiers.

  • Civilians were crowded on to boats and moved
    south to other cities along the coast.

  • Once moved to another coastal city, refugees had
    to flee again from the advancing soldiers.

  • At the end of April 1975, President Ford the
    evacuation of all Americans called Operation
    Frequent Wind. Many Vietnamese attempted to board
    the helicopters in hopes to be evacuated. Some
    were fortunate.

  • During April 1975, over 2000 children were
    evacuated and flown to Australia, Canada, the UK,
    the United States, and other countries. These
    children were then adopted.

  • Over 110,000 South Vietnamese were evacuated.
    Refugees did not know what to expect when they
    arrived in the UK, Canada, Australia, the US, and
    other places.
