4Polio is Rotarys Success
The United Nations agencies, UNICEF and the World
Health Organization (WHO) plus the US
Governments Center for Disease Control all say
Rotarys Polio Campaign is the model for
eliminating the evils which plague our world.
Lets remember that the polio effort started as a
club and district project in the Philippines.
The Rotary Water and Sanitation effort has grown
to a international scope with a Rotary
representative welcomed at UN and international
events.
Lets look at the growth of the polio effort
since it is the classic model.
5Progress in Polio Eradication
6The Challenge Safe Water for Humanity
- 1.2 billion people without safe water
- 2.5 billion people without daily
- sanitation
- 6000 children dying every day
7What is Rotarys Focus on Water and Sanitation
It is all of the following
- Irrigation and agricultural development
- Rainwater harvesting and recharging
- Check dams
- Toilets and latrines
- Pipelines
- Bore wells
- Dug wells
- Sand filters
- Solar Disinfecting (SODIS)
8Like Polio, Water and Sanitation Projects were
born from Compassion
She starts at dawn and ends at dusk or whenever
her family/village needs are met.
Water is womans work
9Coordination Begins
Just as in the beginning in the polio campaign,
Rotarians have been involved at the club and
district level with water and sanitation projects
for years. In our centennial year, RIP Glenn
Estess brought water and sanitation into
International focus by establish a network of
Rotarians appointed to a resource group focused
on water issues. Each RI President since Glenn
has continued the focus. Rotarians have
responded with a myriad of individual projects
like the one to the right.
10Cooperation
As in our polio efforts, cooperation with other
agencies and NGOs has been the secret to success.
Rotary marries the local understanding and
commitment to the funding and organization of
governmental agencies. Rotarys individual
commitment to funding and activism for polio has
sparked the efforts and results we see now. Water
and sanitation projects are on the threshold of
the same international commitment.

11U.N. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Goal 7By 2015 reduce by 50 the proportion of
people without access to safe water and sanitation
Rotary through our U.N. desk, WASRAG, and
Resource Group now attends by invitation most of
the U.N. sponsored water and sanitation
activities. To date, Rotary has not added its
logo to the official list of U.N. activities. We
are discussing a relationship with UNICEF for
water and sanitation projects.

18Water Purification
Education and invention goes a long way to
solving problems. This low tech solution will
kill bacteria fairly quickly.
19Sanitation in Our World Today
20The Linkage is Clear
21Basic Hygiene Makes a Big Difference
WASH THOSE HANDS! The World Health Organization
estimates that simple hand washing could save up
to a million lives a year.

23Tippy Taps are Low Tech
Rotarians LOVE technology but in the developing
world simple and repairable is crucial.
24How is our approach changing?
- We look for holistic projects having real impact
on life and livelihood in a region - Bringing water sanitation to all the schools
and/or hospitals - Implementing a water sanitation system for a
whole community - Collecting water, recharging the wells to
improve agriculture and livestock - Add Rotarys efforts in Health and Hunger as
well as Literacy
25How Do We Hit a Home Run?
Second Base Health and Hunger
First Base Water and Sanitation
Third Base Literacy

26A Different Strategy
- This implies a different strategy for most Rotary
clubs and districts - Organize a community water/sanitation committee
- involve all stakeholders - Invite Developed Countries clubs to help
structure the project (www.wasrag.org) - Create a 3-5 year water/sanitation vision for
the region showing linkages to schools, health,
agriculture, economic activity
- It implies that the developing country Rotary
clubs and districts need to - Identify the real need
- Expand projectsbuild a water system instead of
just drilling a well - Bundle projects of many clubs to get scale and
impact - Show how the project will impact life and
livelihood in the region
27Rain Water Harvesting in India has lead to a 6
Million Project (Under Development)
28South African Rotarians are Developing a 7
Million Program for Schools without Safe Water
and Sanitation
- Why did we pick South Africa for beginning a
large Rotary Program? - Stable Economy and Government
- Good non-Rotary Partners include the Government
and Private Sector - Strong Multi-District Rotary Support from
professionals
29www.wasrag.org
- Share Rotary your time and talent, for those
less fortunate than yourself - Network with other water-minded Rotarians
- Get help for your project
- How to do it access best practices
- Access sources of funding
- Support water and sanitation advocacy
- Find the right project for your club
- How to get started
- Make Dreams Real for the millions who lack
these essentials of life - And maybe most important Save a child,
liberate the women, empower the community
